I will look at price stickers and come back and edit this post with what I pay.

bolded are things that imo, are bi-monthly instead of monthly, with some of them being like 1.5 months. Oh and again with the ****ing light bulbs?

Omar - Buying dish soap, detergent and batteries every 2 months would still be a lot. Regardless, even if he really whips through all that stuff super-fast that's like an extra $20/mth maybe? i can't imagine the price for laundry detergent is that much higher in NYC than other places.

Even if it is, wouldnt it be worth ordering a lot of this stuff online?

also, dont buy your toiletries at teh grocery store, buy them at a dollar store or something similar (sav a lot, aldis, the poor people grocery stores). V05 shampoo and conditions is 99c/pc, TP is 3.99/12 pack, evne walgreens makes "no name" bars of soap for a quarter, that smell just like irish spring or lever.

alright- after seeing the lightbulbs being bought every month, this has to be a level. buy some ****ing new age neon bulbs that least for 10 years. wtf. you dont deserve to get out of debt.

I live in middle America and you can support a family of 5 on that salary. If moving is an option, you will have to take into consideration your income level will probably drop.

I think the point of spending an absurd amount of money on healthy food is so you don't have to spend 30 bucks a month on vitamins

Re: Does earning $65k per year mean you're poor?

$1600/mo rent and $800/mo of groceries are killer. The rent you can't really do much about (w/o getting a roommate or moving) but definitely cut down that grocery bill. I do about the same for a salary and I budget about $400-500/mo on groceries. The CC debt sucks, but its good that your paying it off.

I've got ~$30k of students loans to pay off at 6%. Luckily the subsidized ones don't start the juice running until December 2010 and April 2011, so I've got some time to get ahead.

I make about the same, and set aside 33% off the gross for taxes. Leaves me with $3333/mo

My monthly bills:

Rent: 600
Cell phone: 80
Cable/Internet: 80
Loans: 350
Food: 400
Gas: 100
Car Maint: 75
Utilities: 100
Bowling: 80
Car Ins: 85
Apt Ins: 10

Total: 1925

Obv this doesn't include minor spending money but I will def be making extra loan payments to get my loans taken care of ASAP.

2) Your toiletry prices are completely ridiculous. If you go through cologne every 2 months you smell like a dirty Persian. No need for 20/month in shampoo. No need for 15/month in detergent. What you spend on toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant is insane. You're grossly overpaying for vitamins. Ibuprofin is 7$ for 500 freakin tabs.
I honestly don't believe OP has a clue what he spends on food. I think he guestimated at the beginning, has since realized he was way over, and is now continuing to make up numbers.

Just curious....how much cologne do you have to dump on your head every day to go through a bottle every other month?

And do people around you ever get annoyed by your overwhelming stench? Or are they pretty secretive about it?

Re: Does earning $65k per year mean you're poor?

I don't understand the "roommate" comments, if he lives in manhattan then 1600 is pretty standard for a room in a 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom place etc.

Also I find 800 to be really reasonable for food/etc, but I don't cook so my perspective is skewed.

IMO you have to sell your car. For one you can use that money to pay off your debt, and then you won't be using 500/month to pay off credit card debt. Secondly you save on the gas/insurance/parking.

Of course then you'll have to pay for taxis sometimes but most of the time you can use the subway ($2) or walk.

Obviously he can move but it's likely he will get a much lower paying job then. And NYC is a great place to live if you have some spending money.

65k just doesn't go that far in NYC, especially when you're in pretty big debt and making monthly payments on it. Sell you're car and pay off your debt and you will be fine though.

Meat 25/wk 100 fewer steaks, more chicken.
Seafood 30/wk 120 fewer crabs/lobsters, more cheapfishes.
Eggs 4/wk 16 seems cool.
Coffee 10/month 10 k.

Beer 8/week 32 MOORE.

Liquor 50/month 50 alchie.
Vitamins 30/month 30 the ****?
Aspirin 6/month 6 the ****?
Detergent 15/month 15 the ****?
Dish soap 4/month 4 k.
Body soap 3/month 3 maybe wouldn't need to spend $35 dollars on cologne each month if you bathed properly...
Shampoo/Conditioner 20/month 20 what?
Toilet Paper 5/month 5 k.
Paper Towels 5/month 5 h.
Light Bulbs 3/month 3 you suck at buying light bulbs apparently.
Batteries 5/month 5 k.
Toothpaste 6/month 6 bit high.
Mouthwash 12/month 12 really high.
Deodarant 6/month 6 bit high.
Razor Blades 6/month 6 k.
Shaving Cream 3/month 3 k.
Cologne $70 (35/month) 35
You really use $35 of cologne each month? If I wore mine every day, it'd take me maybe 6mo to use it all up, if not longer. The hell kind of liquefied diamond cologne are you wearing? How much are you putting on? Are you dumping your designer cologne into an AXE bottle and dousing yourself with the stuff? I can only imagine what olfactory horrors you have subjected those in your life to...

Just because Persians always smell like they have half of a bottle of cologne on does not mean that otherwise they would smell dirty. Nobody knows.

Stop wearing cologne. Anyone who may be impressed by it will be quickly unimpessed by the fact that you have the financial intelligence of a doorknob.

I assume groceries means everything random you buy at a supermarket, yeah while he could probably cut out $200-300 if he really tried, it's not going to make a HUGE difference. I think the real question is, how much is the girlfriend making/contributing? When you say $1600 rent, does that mean the place is $3200 and you split or is it $1600 and you pay for both?

Only read OP, but I think that living in New York is a huge reason for 65K not being Middle Class.

I live in a suburb of Milwaukee and 65K is middle class for sure.

Most people don't move to NYC just to survive, but of course, that's what most of them end up doing.

edit: actually, this guy is just a dolt.

i cannot comprehend paying so much for at least half of that crap.

cologne, lol, olive oil 30 bucks a month WAT. body soap is like $3.50 for a bottle that lasts 4-6 months. You're doing it wrong, very wrong

Re: Does earning $65k per year mean you're poor?

NYC is expensive and if you insist on living in Manhattan 65K is not going to cut it. I live in Brooklyn and my monthly budget is around 10k (granted i am not trying to cut corners and that includes 2k for private school and various activities for my kid).
Move to Brooklyn or Queens that should save you about 300-400 a month on rent, shop in Cosco (save another 150-200 easily). 350 for gas and insurance sounds like a lot but whatever...Bottom line until you pay off credit card debt you have to cut down on $1600 rent and it's not that difficult in one of the boroughs.
