From what I've heard, all grocery store fish from the counter is previously frozen, so you can get equivalent quality in the frozen section.

livingitup (lol),
What are the proper methods for defrosting meat and fish? I've always hated dealing with frozen meat, just too much extra time and hassle, as well as crappier texture. Also an OOT cookoff would be pretty good spectating.

I don't want money to buy ultra-luxury type stuff, because, as you stated, upper-middle class does really well these days with technology. I don't care about status. However, I really don't want to be stuck in an office staring at excel in 10 years still.
Welcome to the real world.

this thread derailed .... so i want to ask a question for people with more experience in living on their own than me ....I want to know if you guys think i can realistically move out

i live at home and my take home pay is $1960/month
my main expenses are:
$375/mo for car payment
$200/mo for cell phone and car insurance
$175/mo student loans
$100/mo in credit card debt from college, theres a balance of $4200 on it.
I have $3500 in savings.
I spend about $75/week on food, that includes lunch everyday for me and sometimes dinner and what i eat/drink on weekends.
I dont buy groceries, or pay utilities or pay rent to my mom. every now and then i'll buy groceries or something though. I spend about $35/week on gas also.

Is it possible to live on my own? I mean i'll have a ton of added expenses when i move out, so i really dont know if i'll be able to

Thanks

edit: i plan on living in the Chicago area

You can probably move out. You'll also need a roommate or to live in a ****hole in a bad part of town. Neither option is the end of the world though.

If you move out you'll never pay down your debt. Stick it out or find a better job.

Why do you have savings and credit card debt? Get that paid off ASAP.

How much do you have in student loans and at what interest rate? I'd get out of debt as soon as you can and move out shortly after. Guess it depends how bad it is living with your parents, and what sort of prices you are looking at for apartments.

well i was originally planning on using savings to help with rent so i could live the same and just not worry about rent, but it seems kinda silly now that i think about it with interest rates and stuff.

i have about 20k in student loans at 4.5%

living at home isn't really bad at all except the social life isn't what i want it to be. we were looking for apartments in the $1500/mo range for 3 bedrooms, im gonna be living with 2 buddies from college

You could move out, but I'd wait if I were you. Taking 6-12 months to get the card paid off and as much of the balance on your car as possible would make a huge difference, and the utility derived from getting out of the house sooner is unlikely to be enough to make it worthwhile.

So $500/month rent?

That sounds easily worth it to not live at home. Also, pay off your debt first starting with whatever has higher interest, which is presummably your CC. Using your saving to pay rent rather than CC debt is just plain stupid.

I'd get rid of the car in favor of a more affordable option. After the payment, fuel, insurance and maintenance costs over 25% of your net goes to your car.

alright, i'll be using my savings to pay off my cc debt, should be able to pay it all off next month.

am i spending too much weekly on food/etc?
rent prices seem to be really low in Chicago area right now, but not sure how long that'll last, hopefully i can save up to like a $1000 in the next couple months.

im turning 25 in July and just think that im really falling behind in life in terms of all this

thanks all

No offense but this is the problem. Instead of that car note you could have used those payments to get rid of your cc debt + pad your savings and you could get yourself your own place and not be living at home?

You're going to live in Chicago right? I've lived in Wrigleyville the past 8 years without a car. You don't need it in this city if you work in the loop. That car note sucks....plus parking is a pain in the ass/expensive in the city...

I'm guessing you're in your early 20's, fresh out of school? If so, please listen to everyone's advice: get rid of that CC debt! The student loans are fine, but that CC debt is killer man. I would not leave a rent-free home until I paid off that cc debt. Pretend that you have to pay your mom for rent, and instead write that check to the CC company every month. You will thank yourself later.

Btw, I went to Illinois too. Go Illini!

yeah basically .... i dont work in the city though, i work like 20 miles outside of the city and public transportation isn't really an option since i have to drive to different places for work.

thanks for the advice, i'll definately be paying off that cc debt asap

I would probably ship at least 3k straight to the CC tonight, possibly more. Student loans are sort of whatever, as the interest is relatively low. Obviously it'd be nice to pay that off asap, but all things considered, it's not terrible to just pay off the minimum on it.

I'd probably sell the car and get a beater. 375*12 = 4500 a year for a car, which is sort of a lot. What kind of car do you have? I'm guessing retail of the car was around 15-20k when you bought it. IMO, your car should probably be worth < $5kish in your situation. But it's tough to say what you should do about the car, without knowing what it'd be worth to sell and how much you have paid off already. Either way, it's probably best to downgrade.

I have several advanced degrees but thanks for trying.

Also I don't see how that is relevant given I was financially successful and supporting myself. If I had geographical access to a university that I respected currently I would return to being a student.

lol. dont listen to this.

work hard to pay off your debt and save as much as you can for another 6 mo's/year.

What kind of work are you in? If you've been doing it for a couple years or so and have some solid experience I'm sure you can find a job close to the loop, eliminating the need for a car.
