If this hasn't been mentioned you can buy a ton of this stuff from Amazon for way less.

ok, this has motivated me to do this: on June 1st i'm going to withdraw $400 from the ATM and that will be my entire allowance for all food for that month - if i spend it all by june 20th, then i die. i'm curious i can do it, while eating reasonably healthy/high protein and not feeling hungry all the time. if i can, i'll save a ****load of money every month because my current monthly food expenses make OP's grocery budget look like peanuts.

In canada at safeway, 2 chicken breasts cost like 8$++ or a steak is like 10$, box of cereal is like 5.5$, grapes are like 3$ a pound. I gotta move to usa such cheap food there, no wonder everyone is obese. You know in my city there are hardly any obese people, because the foods so expensive, that must be it.

Most of TJ's frozen meals are loaded with salt. High sodium meals are bad for your health imo.

Jesus Christ you're a master. It's like you specifically choose the most exquisitely mistaken positions for me to facepalm about. You could be Dead. Maybe you *are* Dead.

You're right, FICA, fed, state, city, retirement contributions, etc. all get deducted.

It depends how much he drives and if he really needs it. I have been to NYC a few times and based on what parking cost I can't imagine that cabs are not cheaper at least in Manhattan.
I meant an additional $350. In any case, he mentioned that he spends $350 for gas and insurance. While cabs are not cheap, neither is paying for a parking spot. Subway is a great way to get around. Most people I know that live in NYC don't have a car. Whether or not the op requires a car I don't know, just a suggestion.

Exactly! It's a lifestyle choice imo.

If OP is looking at his biweekly paycheck, turning that into a monthly amount and using that to determine his yearly take home, that explains why he thinks he's poor.

Correct! I was lucky to get my apt. for $1,600. The same units in my building now go for between $2,000 and $2,300. My apt. is nice though, and in a very good area. It is a 1 bedroom, about 700 sq. ft.

I know. It is insane how cheap stuff down there is. Have you looked at real estate? Even before it all went to **** what they could buy for $300k vs what we can get for the same amount is amazing.

If it wasn't completely trollish and douchy I'd actually make a budget and post it just so I could make Anacardo's head explode.

No, and it makes sense why you would be completely clueless about the cost of living.

I think the issue is that as someone who makes $65k he should be in a position to not have to shop at Walmart. $15k in credit card debt is bad but if I'm not mistaken the average household has credit card debt in the $11-12k range.

He doesnt have to shop at walmart, but he isnt content iwth the way his life is right now - and if he wants to be more comfortable financially he's going to have to learn to make some concessions. And for most people, stepping foot into a walmart isnt a traumatizing experience - and may very well be the best choice for him.

i mean, it looks like you lead a pretty miserly frugal life to begin with. i don't see you going to nightclubs everyday, broadway, 4 star restaurants, bar crawls, shopping sprees at Saks etc.

ok, you could move out to the far parts of the boroughs or suburbs where rent is cheap. but it's cheap for a reason. do you like 2 hour commutes? do you like living in far away parts of queens, brooklyn, jersey where the only entertainment for a 30 block radius is scratching lottery tickets at your local bodega or dodging bullets? there is a reason people spend $1,600 to live somewhere. when i first moved to the area, i lived in 4 places over a 3 year period in neighborhoods that were 90 minutes plus commute door to door and i was never so miserable in my life. yeah i spent $600 a month to share but i think i started to develop depression.

that said, i am personally getting tired of how expensive this city is. it just doesn't seem like it's worth it for the long haul unless i win the lottery.
I'm with you. I can accept how expensive everything in NYC is, but it's real estate that I'm getting way too frustrated with. I'm at a point where I would really like to purchase a house. Of course those don't exist in Manhattan, but certain area's of Queens are nice enough. Unfortunatly, a modest 3 bedroom home starts at about $600K. Even when my salary goes up to 100K I still wont be able to afford to buy something that expensive.

Long Island isn't much better either. I'm not fond of the area, and even though housing is slightly lower there, the property taxes are INSANE!

Parts of Jersey are OK, but again, high prop taxes, and I'm not commuting that far. I doubt I could get a job there with an equivalent salary to what I make here in NYC.

Same here. (LOL @ chugging olive oil) Generally, a good quality 1 liter glass bottle of first cold pressed extra virgin olive oil costs about $20 give or take.

I don't know if this has been posted, but between CVS and Walgreens you can get all the toothpaste, mouthwash, razors, contact solution, and soap you would ever need for free.

I mean, you at least quasi-survived a Diablo inquisition, and very few people can say that, but I don't know why you think this would be the nail in some kind of coffin for.. something about me. I'm sure a good solid chunk of OOT would be interested in seeing this, though.

Nope. I do laundry 1x a week. I should've mentioned not only the cost of the detergent, but the cost of doing the laundry itself. My building has a laundry room where small washers are $2/load, large washers are $3/load, and dryers, one size only are $3 for the first 20 minutes.

I'd love to see his budget too.

I just can't imagine him making a concession on anything that would make a difference.

If he was ever in a spot where he needed to budget his life, I'm sure he would find a way, but he's completely lost touch with 'reality' as it's understood by 99.9% of the worlds population.

Clothes wear out faster because you are smashed against subway doors and riding 100 year old escalators that snag and scratch. Apartments are old and soot and dust makes everything filthy, so you have to clean more often.

This city sucks unless you make $100k +
