What? Honestly. 400 sqft? Do you have a bathroom? Obviously your living space is your bedroom but do you also have a kitchen with actual appliances?

No sane person would be happy living in 400 sqft. Jail cells are larger than that.
No, Jail cells are not that large.

I had a place that was about this size when living alone and it had plenty of room when I was in college. I had a bathroom, a somewhat separate sleeping area that had a half wall between the living area, and had a separate kitchen with appliances. Obviously not ideal living, but I enjoyed that having my own place more than having a bigger place shared with roommates.

This.

Before I opened the thread I read the title and said to myself, "Not unless you're living in NYC or San Francisco."

just consulted my mom who cooks 2 legit high-quality meals per day for a household of 3 at the moment and she spends 12 bucks on olive oil per month. im assuming she only buys the good stuff that comes in the metal cans.

OP's entire digestive system is so well lubricated with all that olive oil that he can't absorb any nutrients. All that food just slides right through.

It depends on the meal but I'd say that isn't the case for 80% of stuff here. Chicken Parmigiana if I make it from scratch will cost me the more than a box of frozen Chick-n Parmigiana. Regardless, that wasn't the main point. For me if I'm going to prepare a meal it is actually a meal that involves a lot of ingredients which is much more expensive than eating like a nine year old and just throwing some chicken nuggets and fries in the oven. I couldn't make what I consider a meal for under $20 and most likely I would be looking at $30+ but if I just wanted to eat whatever I can buy pasta in a can for $1-2.
Yes, because a nine year old wouldn't be sophisticated enough to appreciate the delicacy of chicken Parmesan.

i don't know if you'll get much chiming in here - it is a great but unneeded deconstruction that i doubt you'll get many attaboys for - but henry's entire work in this thread is pure lol on several levels.

Henry certainly doesn't seem to have a sense of humor. At least it doesn't show at all over the 'net. I'm enjoying both sides of the argument though. Anytime someone calls out Ano for being an overly wordy pseudo-intellectual it warms the cockles of my black heart.

I lived (until recently) in a 250 square ft. studio apartment -- and yes, it had its own bathroom and kitchenette. It was cramped, but had every single comfort that I needed.

IIRC he's including alcohol in it as well, which could definitely be 100-200 a month for two people.

And all those light bulbs really add up

I guess i'm looking at it from my own perspective, I don't think 400 is "high"

I spend 330 on food, beer from my fridge/liquor in my place, and eating out at reasonable places twice a week.

11 for breakfast weekly
15 for lunch weekly
15 for dinner weekly
25 for eating out twice a week
8 bucks for beer

If you add in occasional spices, toiletries, or a special occasion where i buy some liquor/wine for people to come over 400 is really reasonable.

If i bought my milk, bread, OJ, deli meats/cheese in massive portions of poor quality at Sams Club or Costco the number could go down a lot, but OP has stated he gets utility from buying decent food.

If you haven't been to one of those stores in 15 years or so you're kinda missing out, dude. It's not just 144-packs of Louis Rich pressed turkey anymore.

Admittedly, i haven't been to either in some time, don't you also have to pay a monthly fee for them?

I'll probably check them out again with a friend who has a membership. Thinking about it, that's probably the key to cutting his costs, i imagine a loaf of bread ($3.00 currently for me), or a gallon of OJ ($5.00) would be significantly cheaper there.

My sister lives in Brooklyn. One of the last few times I was up that way, she dragged me to a (free) talk & q-n-a with a couple of her heroes of theatrical theory. Now, I know dick-all from theatrical theory and most of what she has ever had to say about it bounces right off my skull. "We're trying to make theater... into a bowl." No ****, toots. Anyway, they were both oldish women and one of them was clearly some flavor of autie. It was ****ing fascinating & super engaging. It's been quite a while and I haven't followed up, so I couldn't tell you much of what it was about, but I even asked a couple of questions, got good feedback, and it gave us more than enough to talk about for the next few days. Random **** like this, imo, is what really makes NYC a theme park for grownups. Not that theme park theme parks don't rule.

My place is just under 500 square feet and is perfect for me I could probably lose another 50 and be fine with it. The only real drawback is that there is no escaping the smell after I poop.

You guys who seem to think 400sqf is too small are either bad at furnishing your space or just own a lot of big items. I'm living by myself in ~750sqf at the moment and even with a drum set and a large computer desk I have a ton of extra space. If I weren't so lazy I could condense even more and still be very comfortable.

wtf already? Dude spends like $200 on food and donks off $600 in the pits. That itemized shopping list should be used in GA as an example of hiding losses.

Just read prices. If you stopped buying those 5 items, you'd save 183$ a month. That's nearly 25%. 25% is a **** ton.

Although if you have really ****ty hair, then the hair gel is fine at 6/month. However, if you're one of those DBags that use it to spike their hair, please stop. It makes you look like a moron.

I don't disagree with that; in fact, that's quite common. For some reason people rather others assume they're complete gambling degenerates than admit they just suck at poker.
