I almost feel sorry for people that think you need these amounts to live comfortably in NYC. I mean, it's NY ****ing city. There's lots of fun stuff to do on the cheap. And if you have an active social life, you don't need to hang around at home all day and nite. I live here for the arts & culture, the nightlife, the food, the people, the diversity, the variety of institutions of higher ed, the shopping opportunities, etc. I am completely happy in a 400sq ft apt (living alone). I don't need "1000 - 1500 sq ft" to feel comfortable. I don't need to eat out at a 3-star restaurant every night to be happy. Etc. And no, I'm neither a communist nor an ascetic.
