And I second this. And I'm well known for eating a lot of garbage.

I went to The Old Country Buffet last week for the first time this decade for lols and nostalgia, and it's just terrible. I remember going with my grandparents as a kid, and later with friends as a teenager, and it used to be something to look forward to. Now it's tough to fill a plate! Luckily for me they had fresh ground beef patties on a toasted roll. So I ate 5 of those to not be hungry anymore.

But really not the crowd one is happy to associate with.

Lol Izzys too!

And, really, what's $5 these days?
Depends on what you make. If you make $20+ an hr, $5 is forgettable. If you make $10/hr or under, you feel $5 when it leaves your pocket. It might not be "proper", but I definitely have tipped based somewhat on how I'm doing financially. Like, when I was making minimum wage I would tip $2 for a haircut, now I tip like $4 or $5.

I've almost never had a waiter at a buffet be any good at refilling drinks, and it is often tough to even get one to take your drink order and bring it to you without a long wait. I much prefer the few places where you get your own drinks.

Yep. All the food is self-service; they could easily make all the non-alcoholic drinks self service too. Instead, they've deliberately made the overall experience a little bit worse for the customer just so they can justify calling them "servers." No need for servers at all at a buffet - just have busboys (which is already the majority of these "servers'" jobs) and a few cocktail waitresses for the boozers. Then if the busboys aren't getting enough tips, raise the buffet rates a buck a head and pay them more.
