This is going from memory but I'd say this change took hold somewhere around 1990 or so. So there was a bit of a downgrade there I guess as some sectors didn't want to adopt yet another paid holiday.
I think you're thinking of Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday, which were separate about 100 years ago when I was in elementary school. Those two days were consolidated into Presidents' Day when MLK Day became a National Holiday.

I've always worked in the private sector in general and technology in particular, so rolling in after New Year's Day is always tough because there isn't usually another company paid holiday until Memorial Day.

As the last state to adopt MLK Day as a paid holiday I recall the (later impeached) governor out here being reluctant to replace Columbus Day with it. Other states may have dealt with this differently, so I don't understand your attempt at a sick burn.

Besides, this isn't an ethnic melting pot like NYC. We don't care who the holiday is for, just let us know who we're supposed to care about so we can forget about him or it immediately.

I have work, but I'm working from home since I got really drunk last night.

My girlfriend has class at NYU tonight.

I didn't realize it was Columbus day until I went to move my car for street cleaning and saw no one else was moving theirs. I am a bad Italian.

You are, uh, a wop right? In NYC? So this is, uh, something you'd probably know. And, uh, since I haven't had the day off since school and uh am wop-free it is uh of little importance to me when it falls and thus easily forgotten. There is probably some parade downtown today that like five people will attend.

Looks like oT's got it right though - President's Day was formed and Columbus Day had nothing to do with MLK Day. My bad.

The bond markets are closed, and a lot of traders do take off. Im @ work, but there was a big parade yesterday for Columbus day, it is a fairly big deal around here. It has been in OCT for at least a decade if not since I was born, its on mondays, but the parties are always on sundays

HS and grade schools def off here, due to the fact that Im pretty sure our italian neighborhood is as big if not bigger/better than NYCs

Yeah growing up it was all about the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria and a very sterilized version painting him as a hero. Obv that is way too black and white and since then I guess a more realistic view of him has come out, or maybe we were just shielded from it at the time since it was history for kids. Not that it's not worthy of a holiday mind you, but he wasn't simply some dude who went out to prove the earth isn't flat.

Such is about the extent I remember, and some of that may be wrong. And I completely forgot which month it fell in. Two days ago if you asked me which month I'd probably have gotten it wrong. Oh well.

I work at NYU and my office is open but the streets are pretty clear of students so I thought classes weren't on today. Huge number of coworkers out on vacation today, though (including my entire team so even though I'm here, it's basically a vacation day for me too).

High school teacher. My district is open for learning, however, I felt like the kids weren't today.

I work for a normal company in NYC and we get Columbus day off. Works out well for me since it lets me come home and celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving.

The best thing about this is I was going to leave my apartment today to drop off some Netflix videos in the mail. Now I don't have to.
