There was no traffic this morning, it's really really quiet at the office, etc. I had to look it up, and it turns out it's Columbus Day. Columbus Day? Really? People take this day off?

PS - If you try to politard this thread I might do things.

PPS - Canadians, Euros, feel free to tell us about what's going on in your little necks of the woods, I guess.

I don't think many regular business workers take the day off - just schools, banks, and govt offices.

This.

And when you say, it's quiet at the office, does think mean that people took vacation days today because it's columbus day? Or that you didn't have to come in, but did anyway due to ignorance?

Phones are quiet, very few auditions today. Lots of people sick, too, so that contributes to the overall feeling of slowness I guess. Also it's kinda dark and gloomy in LA this morning.

I was wondering if you could overlay maps of "places where they have today off" and "places with a high Italian American population" and see a significant overlap.

I would bet that the correlation is higher based on industry than area.

And other than being in the mafia and cooking, are they any industries that are stereotypically italian-american?

Never in my life have I had these 2nd tier holidays (Veteran's Day, MLK Day, etc.). Don't really care though. Traffic was way lighter this morning - luckily I drive against the flow the whole way but the other side of the freeway is usually totally jammed and today it was moving along as fast as ours, so evidently more people have it off than I thought. Also it was noticeably quieter than normal at the gym this morning, evidently a lot of the working stiffs are sleeping in and coming in when the trophy wives do mid-morning.

If our clients are noticeably absent then I may use it as an excuse to cut out around 3PM though.

If these are 2nd tier holidays, what is Columbus Day? 4th tier?

I get Veteran's day off, but don't have today off. Is this normal?

I'm guessing no.

wut. Any day that generally only schools, banks, and government get off I group together. I suppose the markets may be open today but not on MLK day or whatever but aside from this it's generally the same groups getting it off.

Nit.

I think Columbus Day used to be in like February but eventually got bumped to the fall and replaced by MLK day. This is going from memory but I'd say this change took hold somewhere around 1990 or so. So there was a bit of a downgrade there I guess as some sectors didn't want to adopt yet another paid holiday.

Also, I remember a thread where kyleb expected his employees to work on a true major holiday, I think it was Labor Day, but I can't find it anywhere. And he seemed truly baffled that everyone else got it off.
