Your dad finished his holiday yesterday...updates plz :(

Depending where this goes next this thread could truly take off. Who woulda thought an argument about a chess set could seem so entertaining. Its like a cheap soap opera, lol.

It's the creme de la creme of the chess set world in a show with everything but Yul Brenner.

OP, I want pics of your family but fear trainwrecking. Could you instead post celebrity look alikes for all parties involved in this ongoing kerfluffle? E.g., Betty as Roseanne Barr, etc.

I'm picturing Judah Friedlander as Richard.

My father got back yesterday and I spoke to him today. I told him I gave Richard his home number and that he should expect his call. He responded something like "I don't want to talk to him." Um, didn't you tell me to have them call you? "They need to leave me alone. There's 0% chance I'm going to give them the chess set. Richard has been a total a*hole."

OK, so no real new update. But here's how I see it playing out...

* Richard will call my dad several times, probably leave a few messages.
* Dad will completely ignore every call and message.
* Betty will likely call me and ask why my dad is not responding. I'll tell her I have no idea. She'll whine about it.
* Richard will quickly get tired of my dad avoiding him and start sending emails again.

I'll post more as it comes up.

I'd bet on more like:

* Dad will completely ignore every call and message.
* Betty will likely call me and ask why my dad is not responding. I'll tell her I have no idea. She'll whine about it.
* I and my dad will receive notice of being sued.

* Dad will call Richard a **********.
* Betty will likely call me and ask why my dad called him a **********. I'll tell her I have no idea but suspect it is because he thinks Richard likes to suck ****. She'll whine about it.
* I and my dad will receive notice of being sued.
* Dad will murder Richard and Betty.
* Thread will be bumped in 4 years when the trial starts.

"It may be too late for you to do anything about this."

Then 3 days later Dad wakes up in the middle of the night to this:

Your dad sounds like he's being a baby now.

I used to picture him like Sean Connery kicking back in his library-with-leather-bound-books, sipping on some scotch and smoking a fat Cuban. Now I'm picturing Woody Allen pacing in some cramped apartment with leftover Chinese food containers spread about the place.

Is he really going to let you/the trust get sued over this?

a) A lot of people admire *******s;

b) Richard and Betty do seem profoundly obnoxious.

Legally I don't think there's anything wrong with him. But I think he's being a baby putting his son through all this nonsense and not picking up the phone, after telling his son he was ready to talk. He should be more true to his word. Why proactively tell your son "I'm ready to talk to him" then a week later be like "I'm not talking to that guy..." ?

well if Dads never giving up the Chess set , it can go no other way imo

Amid , have you talked to the lawyer who setup the trust yet? I think its about time who ever the lawyers were involved when you executed this thing get involved and be paid out of the trust to settle it. Either way, Win or Lose.

No, he won't. If it gets that far, I'm sure he'll be more open to conversation (although it may be too late). Also, I don't think I personally can be sued for anything, I haven't been derelict in my trustee duties.

But remember, R & B haven't sent a single email that has been even remotely polite or civil. Had they started down a different path, this may have played at differently. They began with demands and orders and it went downhill from there. I agree my father is being pretty stubborn, but I don't blame him for his attitude.

You're talking about a $5k-$7k chess set here. It may be worth it to defend against a lawsuit, especially when there is no chance the other people win.

Did you ask your dad why he told you to give his number to Richard?

I wonder what happened that changed his mind.

We haven't really got into the history of why there's so much animosity between your father and his sister. I know it's not really relevant, but given how bat**** everybody seems to be, it should be pretty interesting.

My understanding is that the feud started when Betty, in a fit of piquedness and hunger, ate the beloved childhood horse of Amid's dad.

As fun as it may sound to psychoanalyze my father and aunt, I'm going to respectfully decline at this moment. I don't think my stomach can handle it. However, I can give you some examples as to how difficult it's been to deal with Betty and maybe it will give some insight into my father's decision.

When my grandmother passed away, my father handled all the funeral arrangements (picking the casket, headstone, etc.) and paid for it himself. I told him it would be no problem to get reimbursed, since that is one of the things the Trust was specifically setup to handle financially. After about a month, he gave me the bill from the mortuary with a matching credit card charge. I wrote him a check and sent it on to Betty for her counter-signature. She refused to sign the check.

Her reasoning was that the bill from the mortuary wasn't itemized. Therefore, she didn't feel "comfortable" paying my father back because she couldn't be 100% sure that the money he spent had gone to her funeral. I asked her what could he have possibly done at the mortuary other than funeral arrangements? She said "I don't know, maybe he bought a flat screen TV." (I swear on my life she actually said that). I tried to explain to her that most mortuaries don't sell TV's, but she wasn't convinced. It took over 4 months of my father and me (mostly me) fighting and arguing with her before she finally got a detailed invoice directly from the funeral home and signed the check.
