It wasn't Coruscant. It was the home of the New Republic government:

We saw Darth Vader betray and murder the Emperor. Prior to that, both Vader and the Emperor were scheming to betray the other by taking on Luke Skywalker as their apprentice.

We also saw Palpatine betray Count Dooku by ordering Anakin Skywalker to murder him.

Yes but we never see a battle, red saber vs red saber. Vader picked up Emperor and threw him, that's about it. Of course scheming happens but not a fight. Would be interesting and "original" if VIII ended with Ren taking on Snoke.

Finally read through the whole thread.

1. Put me in the "loved the movie, you nits suck" camp.

2. Many of the bits you were complaining about were so obviously deliberate and tongue in cheek call backs. Eg. The plan to attack the death star/planet. "Of course there's a vulnerability, we attack that, plan over, let's cut to awesome fight sequences"

3. Something I haven't seen discussed yet. What happened to ghost/force annakin? He appeared at the end of 6 after vaders redemption. Wouldn't he be guiding Ren to be good rather than evil?

4. Ren obviously a sissy. Probably betrayed luke and the others after Luke cut him from the Jedi team for sucking at Jedi skills.

yeah I think people complaining about the recycled plot points are missing the point, which is that that was the point! obviously JJ wanted people to recall the "I am your father scene" when he had Han face off with his son ALSO on a scaffold. he didn't just think "hmm I hope no one notices that I'm using this same sort of idea"

yeah you don't want him recycling entire scenes with different characters (and the Cantina/Maz scene got pretty close to this) but I think he'll treat the movies going forward a bit differently. he wanted to get everyone excited about Star Wars again and this was a way of doing it.

Hey, if you like movies with completely unoriginal storylines, uninteresting characters, major plot holes, designed to make money and pander to people's nostalgia then great. Glad you enjoyed it.

You can understand that the filmmaker thought that copying the plot of the previous movies was "the point" and still think that it is a lame and disappointing choice.

yes. but like, how many of these movies have actually had totally original storylines. in the first 3 movies there were TWO Death Stars!!

Anakin was a poor desert boy being raised by maybe not his parents just like Luke was.

I think we'll start to get more original stories going forward, and yeah if Episode VIII opens on a frozen planet that's gonna be lol. but don't be shocked if someone turns from the Dark Side to the Light Side or vice versa, bc those are pretty standard tropes in this series

Depending on whether 9 is the last of the original ideas that Lucas has planned you can bet snoke will probably die which is very similar to th emperor dying. They reveal the main character's father much like the original. Kylo will either become good or likely die. With that being said they have a ton of space to work with to get there but you typically only can go so far in good vs evil storylines. I would assume if 9 is the last, there will likely be some positive ending.

Gonna be a real game changer once they figure out the strategic advantages of making more than one death star at a time.

i'd build a remote death star far away and cloak that ****. when the rebels were all up in the other death star, i'd blast that death star to smithereens. ez game

I'll give you that the storylines are unoriginal, but Rey is the most charismatic lead in the history of the franchise, I don't think there were any plot holes that were glaringly bad compared to the rest of the genre (coincidences aren't plot holes), well of course it was designed to make money, and what's wrong with pandering to nostalgia?

discussed a bit upthread but I think the end will only come when the demand from consumers is no longer there. Disney has money to make and shareholders to make happy, no way they just end at 9 if the consumer demand is there. If I had to guess I would say there will be at least 6 more "main episodes" into theatres (these 3 new + 3 more) along with 5 or 6 more side stories/anthology pieces. I would definitely bet > 10 new Star Wars movies in the next 20 years.

(also I don't think Lucas had very much to do with the current trilogy's storyline).

Lots of talk about the Rey/Ren lightsaber battle, but I haven't seen much discussion about the saber itself.

Luke's light saber called to Rey (how?) in the basement of Maz's, then showed her some visions (both optic and aural). Later, the light saber flew to her hand when Kylo Ren was reaching for it (as if it "belonged" to her, instead of to him).

Maybe the reason she did so well in the fight was that the weapon itself was assisting.

The whole concept seems more Potter/wand-ish than SW/Force-ish, since we were told that the Force bound living things, and not "crude matter". But it does explain a bit. We've never seen an inanimate object use the force before, to "call" to a person and give visions, have we?

There's something about that saber. Maz said it was a question for another time -- December 2017 maybe?

Unless of course someone makes an in-joke. Then its not unoriginal, it's ironic.

Pretty sure they have said they will make 1 a year. One time-line, and one back-story in alternate years.

I don't see a Star Wars movie making <$500m at the box office any time soon, and stopping making them won't even be a discussion for Disney until that happens.

They could probably film Jar Jar taking a **** and it would do $250m and score >7 on IMDB right now.

right, they have said 1/year, but so far that means "1/year for the next 6 years".

(now 5 more years, they have announced 3 Anthology films + 3 Trilogy films)

but they'll keep going
