It has characters we like though, that counts for a lot. TFA was a bit the same, OK, paper thin plot, just a pure rehash of ANH, but it's the only movie outside the OT with likeable characters.

So, I've finished R1 now. You guys weren't lying. The second half of the movie is good entertainment. All the boring characters die (i.e. all characters die), and the Vader scene is great. CGI Tarkin and Leia for the nostalgia tingles. Overall an enjoyable experience. But having to endure the first half of it for that? Not worth it, imo.

Finally caught Solo last night. First SW film I've dozed off during while watching. Obviously had no problem picking the plot back up again.

Was a surprisingly short on high spots for a SW film - everything just happened and then the film ended.

However, was better than TLJ on account of not having any truly terrible spots.

I also just watched Solo last night. It was awful, possibly worse than TLJ.

Han has no character development and it undermines the development we get in the original trilogy.

Action scenes were largely uninteresting. Giant space squid lives a few seconds flight from the mouth of a gravity well and doesn't know better than to fall in, really?

Dialog felt contrived. Side note, it seems every character in this movie understands a dozen or more languages. Why even have protocol droids like c3po?

Pretty much the only redeeming value came from the scenes with lando. Glover is a fine actor with good charisma.

Han however lacks charisma entirely.

The story is inconsistently told. It feels like almost no time has passed for Han while it feels like nearly a decade has gone by for his love interest.

So, I decided to prove my nerdiness and, in more than one sitting, watched the entirety of this Critique of TFA - Introduction (yes, this is an introduction to his critique of the movie, which he says will span around 15 hours in total over the course of multiple videos).

Despite the length, I can recommend watching it, if for nothing else than the first hour, during which he discusses objectivity vs subjectivity, which was a subject of discussion in this thread not long ago.

Or you decide you're not as much of a basement dwelling incel nerd as I am, and skip on that, which is fine as well. But that's just my opinion, of course.

I don't need no critique, it's sucked donkey balls. That's all you need to know.

I am quite curious about a 15 hour critique of a 2 or so hour movie tho. Someone needs to make highlight clips of all the gold.

Finally got bored and fired up Solo on Netflix tonight, so time to beat the dead horse a little more with a late review.

It was...OK. Went in with low-to-medium expectations and it very slightly exceeded them. Basically a heist movie set in the SW universe and it was fine in that respect, the various double-crossing was somewhat but not totally predictable, and the action set pieces were solid.

Harrelson and Glover were great, everyone else was passable. I'll echo the totally unoriginal observation that Ehrenreich didn't remind me of Han in the slightest, but he didn't do a bad job either. I almost think they'd have been better off with someone just outright doing an impression, like Karl Urban basically does with Bones in the ST reboots.

The movie was mostly devoid of the cringey kiddie-type humor that's usually the thing to take me completely out of a SW movie (see Eps. 1 and 8). A few light moments that were in keeping with the tradition of the franchise (I lol'ed at "I hate you!" "I know.") The L3 stuff was odd but she wasn't really a huge part of the movie, they seemed to know just about how much the audience could stand.

The most annoying parts were the backstory shoe-horning type stuff (origin of Han's last name which we didn't need, "hey guys we're making the Kessel run!", etc.) and sequel bait like the dumb Darth Maul cameo and setting up Han to work for Jabba. Really glad that the movie likely did badly enough that we're spared the inevitably-worse follow up.

Miscellaneous dumb things: Chewie obviously spoke English (Basic? Whatever), so why did Han have to tell him his escape plan in pidgin Wookiee? Could they maybe have made at least one of the Sabbacc scenes less cliché than "I have a straight." "Wow that's really great, but I have a full house mwahaha!" Have Han snap off Lando's king-high bluff with a pair or something.

So yeah, it was reasonably entertaining. Inferior to R1 just as far as the side stories go but not sure by how much. Have to let it settle in before deciding where it fits among the whole series, it's somewhere in the middle of the pack but that's saying more about how bad the prequels and Ep8 were than anything.

Rise of Skywalker, eh?

Going to just assume at this point that Rey is somehow a Skywalker.

The only way to do without just throwing all of Last Jedi (certainly a possibility), is to have her be a clone/test tube baby from Luke's hand that was cut off in Empire. Anakin's lightsaber still exists and she has it, so what happened to the hand? Someone (the Emperor seems most likely at this point) had a clone or baby made from the hand, someone else found out about her (Leia? Luke?) and had her secreted away on a desert planet (sound familiar?). Her parents aren't anyone important because she literally has no parents.

Excited for them to go to what looks like Endor though to fight Ghost Emperor Palpatine.

I got feels from that trailer.

I will never ever learn.

Maybe the title of the film should be Rise of THE SENATE instead?

usually no matter how bad i'm expecting a movie to be, a teaser gets me pumped for it. this did not. it was just kind of shoulder shrug and ok.

Episode VIII: Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.

Episode IX: Palpy’s back! And Lando! And let’s go back to Endor too.

I hope they retcon the **** out of TLJ.

It's amazing to me how much the ST has mirrored the PT for me.

I was a huge nerd for the OT, and when Ep 1 came out I left feeling "meh, ok I guess", then Ep 2 was a dumpster fire and I didn't even watch Ep 3 until years after it came out on DVD.

Like clockwork, I left Ep 7 feeling "meh, ok I guess", Ep 8 was possibly the worst movie I've seen in a theater, and I have no desire to see Ep 9 anymore.

Not sure if mentioned yet, but for those dissatisfied with the ST, I downloaded the original Thrawn Trilogy on audible and listened while driving cross country. It is a much better story than the Disney movies if you have the time/desire to listen to audio books.

It just blows my mind people think Ep 8 was worse than 2.

2 is just sooooooooooo bad, no matter what you think of 8 there's no way you could find it worse than 2.

Thrawn Trilogy is def very good (and my guess for an inspiration for the Ep 9 plot), I haven't read whatever the new thing is but I loved the **** out of those books when I was a kid.

+1.

They certainly want to give the impression they are just going to ignore TLJ.

Let's hope that's the case.

Oh, and BDW looks great for a man of 82!

Imo, they are both turds and debating which one is more bearable for me is worthless when they both stink so bad they make me gag.
