That woulda been pretty epic, as they played it having half a tard as a constant character was super annoying. I think that angle woulda made the prequels way better then they were. It's actually kind sad.

The prequels don't exist. Episode VIII doesn't exist. I'm half accepting episode VII into my personal Star Wars canon, because it gave me some nostalgia tingles. That's it.

The final Vader scene of R1 absolutely has to be accepted. It might be the best SW thing to exist outside of the OT.

I'm fine with all of R1 as is. It has its questionable parts (the first Vader scene, Forrest Whitaker and his weird octopus friend) but they're no worse than any of the more cheeseball parts of the OT.

it isn't a matter of any one part being worse than any part of another movie. It's that the whole narrative lacks any urgency or emotional involvement outside of "hey the death star needs 'sploding, because, you know, other movies you've seen".

I've seen R1 4-5 times now and enjoyed it each time.

Characters are pretty disposable, but still way better than Rey & Finn.

Funny bits are actually funny.

And yeah, Vader scene GOAT SW moment outside EP 4 and 5.

The characters in R1 are terrible, but the movie cleans up its own mess

Yeah I feel like R1 is like that spinoff show or sequel that you weren't expecting a ton out of because it's not following any known characters, but you watched it anyway and found it entertaining as hell. The characters are 2-dimentional-ish and all just kinda there to fill a role, but they all do it well.

So it's trendy now to like Rogue One and dislike Rey? That's interesting but ok

i ****ing loved R1 and everyone else can **** right off.

also liked Ep 8.

liked ep 7 on first watch, do not enjoy it anymore.

even if you didnt like Rogue one, i'd easily watch 3+ hours of pure ewok trash just for 5 more mins of that vader scene. easily the best scene in star wars so far.

The Vader scene is the only memorable thing about R1. I'll throw in blind Ip Man for honorable mention even tho it was corny.

I think the reaction to R1 ITT was overall pretty positive (although not overwhelming) first time around, so not exactly sure it's a trend.

Agree with jmakin that Ep 7 is way less enjoyable on rewatch now, mainly knowing that all the characters went sideways/backwards in the next movie which makes their arcs in 7 seem kinda hollow.

Agree with all of this...it gave me pretty much exactly what I want from a new Star Wars movie. Not that it was perfect, but after the flaming piece of Disneyland garbage that was E8, I think R1 is as good as its going to get.

I also don't view the positive R1 stuff as a recent trend. I rewatched it recently and think my thoughts were very similar to what they were when I first watched it, that the beginning is a huge mess but that the final act is overall solid and has some extremely solid moments. As far as I can recall this was a pretty common opinion when the movie had just come out, too.

I even liked the middle more than most people, and I'm not too ashamed to admit it. I really liked Mads Mikkelsen for whatever reason, his death scene was actually touching.

Yea R1 was positively received.

If we get on to people suddenly liking hot garbage E8, then we are talking.

E8 turned Star Wars to a reluctant must watch regardless of aggregated opinion web sites to will only watch E9 at cinema if latter come in massively positive.

Yea, I just remembered that. I have really forgotten about that film and anything to do with it.

I will probably watch E9 at cinema anyway as kid will want to see it.

LOL the big screen is really the only place to see it. I watched ep 7 and it had the same effect as Avatar and other movie of it's kind. Awesome on the big screen and once you see it on a normal tv turns into a yawn fest.

Specifically, the biggest screen you can find, preferably with 4k laser IMAX projection and state of the art audio.

Metreon in SF, Chinese and Universal Citywalk in LA kind of theaters.

For popcorn blockbusters, it's go big or go home.

(I'm getting pumped for the blockbuster coming up in 3 weeks, but that's a different thread, I suppose.)

For Solo, I'm 100% not watching it opening weekend and will really have no problems pirating it at my convenience if it sucks.

Ep 9 I'm willing to do the same, but I have a feeling I might cave depending on early reports from sources I trust. Corporate Disney has their issues but they're not stupid, and I'd be shocked if they didn't study the fan hate intensely and make a ton of effort not to **** up in the same way again (they may **** up spectacularly in new ways though). Probably the kind of thing where upon repeat viewings the fan service moments will be obvious and we'll be come more cynical about em, but it'll make for a good first watch.

Considering the mess they made of Ep.8, Even if they really wanted to, what kind of fan service moments could Ep.9 possible have?

In terms of story they have two options: Either Rey kills Kylo, or turns him to the light. Neither of these is interesting, nor can they make them fans-service moments.

The only thing I can think of is resurrecting Luke and have him face Kylo properly. I guess, if they are resurrecting Luke, they could go the whole hog and bring Yoda, Obi Wan, Anakin, Qui Gon and Mace to take on the Empire.

It's obviously dumb, but I'd pay actual money to see it.
