Disney and Lucasfilm are excited to announce that principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, will commence May 2014, and will be based at London's historic Pinewood Studios.

This will be the first Star Wars film to start shooting in the month of May.

It has also been confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is set about 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces. No further details on casting or plot are available at this time.

Star Wars: Episode VII will release in theaters on December 18, 2015.

Would love to see a sequel where C3PO and R2D2 get transported to contemporary New York City.

Didn't they do that in Terms of Endearment?

70 minutes long? And some guy with a terrible voice trying to be funny? It will have to be incredible to make it worth watching past the first 2 minutes.

For Star Wars 7 they're planning on following the plots of a bunch of mediocre non-canonical novels and comics?

uhh.... the EU is canon. wtf are you talking about?

The Dark Nest is really the only series that makes sense here, unless he's gonna pull a Star Trek reboot thing like he did with the new movies and introduce a parallel universe.

Oh wait are you one of those idiots that are like "TEH MOOVIEZ ARE TEH ONLY CANONINICAL STAR WARZ DUHH!!! AND JUST THE 1ST THREE!!"

Well, no, Lucasfilm, and to a huge extent Lucas himself, has had an active hand in guiding the EU and has had the ultimate decision on what's published for like 30 years now. Unless they wanna throw that all out the window and piss off an entire legion of fans, Dark Nest seems exactly like what they're gonna do here.

Oh my goodness gracious no, I don't care enough about Star Wars to say something like that. I haven't seen the original trilogy this millennium.

What I'm fairly certain of is that it would not affect the box office or future of the property in any meaningful way if they disregarded all events from books and comics. The 8,000 people who care that much about it won't make a difference. This is bigger than them. If there's a great story to be told that throws everything other than 1-6 away, you do it.

Except Lucasfilms has been known for being extremely tight with their canon (part of what makes the whole series so awesome) and that would be a highly atypical move from them.

I wouldn't hate it as much as some, but the backlash from that would probably be worse than the prequels.

That said Lucas has never failed to piss me off so one final **** you to the star wars fans still remaining would be totally appropriate.

They might have nods to the books, but I'd be flabbergasted if they actually used any of it for the movies.

yep.

I read the Zahn series but if anything I would prefer they NOT be the source material for the new movies. and the number of people who would really not see the movies if they created new storylines would be tiny.

You know why this thread exists, right? B/c Lucasfilm was bought by Disney?

how Lucasfilm acted in the past really doesn't matter at all anymore. Disney didn't pay $4b to not be able to call the shots.

I thought the exact same thing and missed them when they first came out. I thought the guy sounded like an idiot. But if you watch them there are a ton of insight into the difference of the original series and the prequel. I grew an appreciation for well written movies after watching that series and they really made me a more thoughtful viewer of other movies/tv shows. Highly recommended even if the jokes aren't always hilarious.

Didn't they already say they aren't going to be shackled by the EU? They have a committee that's going through it all to determine what they are going to use.

I think that even required nods to cannon like bringing back Harrison ford, and Carey fisher is already guaranteeing it's going to be a train wreck of Xmas special proportions.

Does anyone even understand what made star wars special? It was the fact that everything was brand ****ing new. Every movie of the original trilogy introduced new mind blowing concepts and characters and it was ****ing awesome.

Now you have a huge fan base that demands they be pandered to and we are just going to get some mediocre retread like the Abrams Star Trek movies. We are going to get a text crawl that will be followed by the unleashing of the Star Wars clown car. Han, leia, Luke, the 2 droids, chewbacca, tatooine, yoda's ghost, some 2 dimensional sith villains, some technological terror the galaxy has never seen, Hans kids, etc, etc, etc.

I am highly skeptical these sequels are going to be any good. I'd love to proved wrong but Disney is too big of a corporate entity to really put any soul into the film or take any risks.

Umm. The planet Coruscant got it's name from Zahn's Heir to the Empire (thrawn trilogy). Also you can see Dash Rendar's outrider (shadows of the empire) in the Star Wars Special Edition. They did it before, i'd be surprised if they didn't do it again.

Taking ideas from the novels would be a great idea as there were plenty of great series. Hell if they just took the Thrawn trilogy and made it into movies it would be a huge success. Problems with casting characters like Luke, Han and Leia would probably come into play.

jmakin et al.

Are any of the Star Wars novels actually good and worth reading? I never bothered with them and just assume that while teenage me may have enjoyed them there is no way I'd find them enjoyable now.

Are there any that you would consider excellent? Point me to the best of the bunch and maybe I'll give them a shot when I'm due for a guilty pleasure read.
