Seems like every other sci-fi/fantasy movie is a prequel or a reboot any more. That can work, but I'd like to see the story move forward and not know what's going to happen in the end.

Exactly. That's the problem with a reboot--you know Anakin will turn bad. So why put so much effort into him. Focus on new characters where you don't know what's going to happen.

It's worth remembering that, while in production, Star Wars was ridiculed by pretty much the entire movie industry, including most of the cast and crew. It was expected to be amongst the biggest turkeys of all time.

The opening scene, where the Princess's ship is being chased by the enormous Starcruiser, is probably the best example of how a sceptical audience can be just about instantly won over by sheer talent.

The audience just 'bought it' straight away. If Disney gets it right, none of the pessimistic talk will matter. I just hope that when they sit down and discuss how they will approach the next movie, the first thing they ask themselves is why the first 3 films were so well liked and why the next 3 were not, by and large.

With JJ Abrams directing and Michael Arndt writing the script (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3, Brave, and The Hunger Games), I am getting pretty stoked.

I think JJ Abrams directing is really good news. Not only can he do big sci fi successfully but Super 8 showed that he can recreate the feel and look of certain types of films from a certain period that really give you a nostalgic feeling.

Ya good pick. I felt like his new star trek movies were a little too actiony for the star trek series but would be a perfect fit for star wars. If he can put a little of that super 8 magic into the film its possible to coming close to what made the originals such classic movies. In any case, any random director = George Lucas x 1000

This is Bob Graham's take on the situation

This will be a big mistake as I don't want to see Luke Skywalker washed up, it would completley ruin the original starwars for me and they should scrap this idea or the project all together if this is true.

I do think Disney could make the next 3 films amazing if they perhaps set them years before Episode 1, with the only characters present that are in other films being Palpatine and Yoda, this could be interesting if done right. Disney could even base the films on the force unleashed that takes part in between Episode 3 and 4, I like the games very much and would like to seem them adapated into film. Lastly, Disney could always base the films on the events that take place in the Starwars universe books, there are unlimited possibilities if they choose this route.

I just honestly think they will make a big mistake having an old Han Solo, Luke and Leia. I will not be seeing the film if this is the case and having an old mark hamil in a lightsaber battle would just be stupid and pointless.

lol at it being possible to tarnish the legacy of Star Wars more than the 3 prequels already have. They could make an intergalactic Smuggling industry mock reality show on the history channel starring 98 year old harrison Ford and it wouldn't have any further effect. They have an above average director attached that's really all you can ask for at this point if you're in the <1% that is actually interested in future Star Wars movies.

I wouldn't be that surprised if they just remade the first three films after all they're over twenty years old and they're the ones that worked. Even if people go mental over the idea id bet they would still pay to see them.

Not like they'd pay to see quality new material though.

just make a star wars movie about the smugglers and seedy underworld and let the galactic war play out in the back ground.

Spin-offs coming, starting with Han Solo and Boba Fett:

The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars (now known as A New Hope), so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original.

The Boba Fett film would take place either between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or between Empire and Jedi, where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit. Exactly who would play him isn’t much of a complication – in the original trilogy, he never took off his helmet. And in the prequels, we learned he was the son of the original stormtrooper clone, played by Temuera Morrison, who’s still the right age for the part if his services were required.

Both have potential, so long as they don't start from early childhood. Character-focused spinoffs seem like a good idea for Star Wars and there's a number they could do. These two are solid choices, then there's post-Episode III Vader and Obi-Wan, if you wanted to stretch there's Darth Maul. The Disney guy confirmed there were "a few" standalone spinoffs, AICN is saying one is being made on Yoda as well.

It's a good solution to expand on past characters for people who'd be interested in one-offs, while freeing up the main series to move on from these characters for good. Best of both worlds, and just more stuff to watch if you're a fan.
