Would love to see Joss Whedon or Brad Bird direct the sequel

As long as its not Lucas directing there is a remote chance this will be awesome. Would love to see Whedon direct.

So they just handed a $4 billion dollar cheque to Lucas? Lol, that guy is a genius.

I am hoping that they skip the sort of episode 7-9 that we're the thrawn series of books. They should just skip all that and start with a clean slate. Get a good director and someone that actually knows how to write and this could be awesome.

Would be awesome if this turned out to be the best of the series

Would be a fail if not better than the second trilogy

The likelihood of it sucking and the amount I would hate it if it sucked way outweighs the slight chance that it's worth it. I'm not that pleased.

Actually, it's a $2 billion check and the rest in Disney stock.

Someone already wrote a Wikipedia article speculating on the storyline of Episode 7. Wonder how long until the article gets memory holed, because it's almost pure speculation.

Disney's done well with Marvel, mixed results with Pixar and fairly poorly with other assets (John Carter? Tangled?).

I expect a SW-themed ride in Tomorrowland within a year.

Having said all that, I just have to say...

I've got a bad feeling about this.

Tangled, great film worldwide gross $590m. Yeah they really screwed the pooch with that one.

The thing is, this movie will have to be at least 50% better than the original movies for people to claim that it is even in the same league as them. For people to say that it is "better" than the originals, it will have to be at least 2x better IMO.

I'm optimistic, but this making this movie is going to be a tall order.

Edit: although who am I kidding, we all know this movie is going to make a profit regardless simply because it has the name Star Wars in the title.

I think Star Wars fans are to elated upon hearing that George Lucas sold the franchise rights. Getting Lucas out of Star Wars is probably their greatest dream.

Even though Lucas will be a creative consultant, I expect others will be doing all the heavy lifting. Otherwise, he wouldn't have sold the franchise.

Casting aside the EU (expanded universe) and creating a completely new story for Episodes 7+ would definitely create a "freak out" among many hardcore fans.

I think its fair to look forward to it. Seeing what Abrams did with Star Trek and what Whedon is doing with a product like The Avengers gives some hope to future installments of Star Wars. Just depends on if the right people get involved.

you mean in a good way or a bad way?

me: huge Star Wars fan, disappointed in the prequels, super excited for this, read the Thrawn books but would be much more excited for a new storyline

Count me as pumped.

There was always speculation that he was working on something. Hardcore fans aside, I wouldn't mind seeing a huge expansion into the Star Wars world. It looks like we are just going to get an extension of the original series for now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more than 1 prequel series in the next 20 years(beginning of council, rise of yoda, etc).
