I think we can safely assume that this kid's parents weren't embarrassed, so they aren't carrying even part of the cost of the crying

Take her for a walk. Show her cars or trees or whatever works, but do it away from people.

I can't see where this is even debatable.
+1

Before I had kids people like this used to really piss me off. Now I've got 2 kids just over a year apart and have been in this situation more than a few times when they were this kids age. People who don't do this still really piss me off.

Unfortunately in today's society, we all have to be politically correct and careful not to offend anybody, ever. We all have to balance across the middle line.

We are raising a generation of pussies. Self-entitled kids with self-entitled parents. If your kid is uncoachable, then your kid eventually becomes unemployable.

Any parent that lets their kid scream for 40 mins deserves another parent or adult to come in and do the work for them. Think about the child's parents that then went to FB to bitch about the encounter. Imagine what kind of parenting/teaching is going to be done to this child while growing up. I bet if this kid plays on a sports team, the parents will be offended with a coach screaming at the kid to work and might even sue the other team if they beat their kid's team too badly.

Example: Adam Carolla has twins - one is named Natalie. Adam also has a housekeeper to help while he is working is ass off 24/7 to support his family. One day Natalie was playing with the housekeeper and went to far and spit on the housekeeper's face. The housekeeper slapped Natalie. Natalie cried. Natalie never spit on her again.
Did Adam care? NO! He tells this story all the time. He realizes the kids need to face adversity and if you do something wrong, sometimes you need to learn the hard way.

Just raise your ****ing kids people! Be aware that your kid is sitting in a restaurant full of people crying for 40 mins. Have some social awareness. Raise them to not be self-entitled pricks.

Does this parent take this kid to a movie theater? If so, would this parent get offended if anyone asked the kid to be quiet? Or asked the parents to take the kid out of the movie so the rest of humanity can enjoy the meal/movie they paid for?

The fact the owner had to eventually take matters into her own hands speaks volumes about how bad/annoying the kid actually was.

I don't like dogs or screaming children in the restaurants I visit.

What's wrong with yelling at the kid? Somebody has to.

100% owner is right and parents are pathetic.

I really don't get the indignation have about someone yelling a few words at some kid. Boo-****ing-hoo. Kids understand hunger, pain and being yelled out.

How did yelling at some kid rise to the level of Nazi war atrocities?

No. The person yelling at the baby/kid is doing something we all want to do. And in this case, it actually worked and the kid shut up. The kid respected authority, that's a good thing. Life lessons.

The owner is correct on the merits, but she comes off as a mild loon, if only because of her invective-laden facebook rant. On the few occasions where I had to get after my kids to behave correctly in public, I never had to raise my voice above normal.

Amusing story, however. When my youngest was two and a half, ten of us were sitting at our long dining room table eating Thanksgiving dinner. For whatever reason, I was the only person looking at my daughter, who picked up a glass of water, took a great big swig, and then spat it out all over her plate and immediately surrounding environs. I sharply (maybe even a yell) said "No. 2, what the hell do you think you're doing?" Because nobody else saw what she'd done, my stern tone seemed unwarranted to everyone else and I got a firestorm of criticism from Mrs. T, my mom, my law school roommate, his wife, and the peanut gallery. The only person that wasn't angry with me? My daughter, who knew exactly and precisely why I had gone after her.

The mom wrote an article telling her side of the story which was published in the Washington Post today.

Quote:
When the food came, my daughter was still fussing. My husband and I decided that we would eat our food quickly then leave.

Out of nowhere, Marcy’s Diner owner Darla Neugebauer threw to-go containers at my husband and yelled, “Either she goes or you go!”

We hadn’t seen this woman before and didn’t know who she was. She seemed so unprofessional that we didn’t take it seriously.

Mom seems like she is oblivious. Obviously both sides are cleaning up their stories. Why should no one yell at children? I don't think it's right to be verbally abusive but I also don't see a problem with someone yelling at their children if they are acting up.

True story. I took my 3year old drama queen granddaughter to the grocery store one day. Normally, I don't, but it was Easter time, and there were things I needed RIGHT NOW.

We're going up and down aisles, she behind me, and when I got to the end of a row, I turned and discovered she had stopped halfway down, right in front of the toys.

She pointed. "Mommom, please".
"No. Come on".
"Mommom, puhlease".
"No".
By now, she's crying, and getting loud. People are starting to watch, waiting to see who would win this battle of wills.

I held out 5 minutes. She would not budge. Man, I was so pissed, I went stomping back to get her, vowing it was the LAST time I would take her anywhere.

When I got to her, she tearfully pointed at the toys, and there, right in the middle, were the f***ing egg dye kits I had been searching for. She had found them for me.

Talk about feeling like ****. I sat right down on the floor and apologized to her.

Do people seriously think its appropriate to yell at a crying pre-2 year old? I get that you may want to, but at that age they are too young to understand why you are yelling. Yes, it might shut them up, but that is because they will be scarred of you, not because they are learning a life lesson.

It sucks when kids cry, buts its normal and not the kids fault and yelling at them is just horrible parenting (and even worse when its coming from a stranger).

Having spent a lifetime disciplining other people's kids, every once in awhile I have found myself fixing behavior while the parents look on. That said, I would never talk to a two year old, because I consider them alien beings, I'm much better with older kids.

I would have lasted about five to ten minutes and then I would have been dealing with the parent's behavior. I'm shocked that the owner was forced to deal with this.

+1, amusing. I'm demanding of my children but also entirely willing -- as occasionally happens -- to apologize to them when I've made a clear mistake.

Yeah, that story is total horse****. Mom goes out of her way to point out that she told her kid she'd never be brought up to be like the owner, totally made up to make herself look good. What a piece of work.

She acknowledged that she was asked to leave and refused to do so. Her justification "She seemed so unprofessional that we didn’t take it seriously." is loltastic given that this is the cleaned and sanitized PR response. I wonder how long they spent coming up with that.

Good. People with kids think they're above everyone who doesn't have them, and that their kids rule the world to the exclusion of anyone else in it. Their toddler doesn't need to scream and disrupt a meal for everyone in a legitimate place of business for the better part of an hour.

The threat of physical violence towards the end was stupid and unnecessary, but otherwise, good for Marcy's Diner.

This. It's amazing what people get offended at nowadays, and what we prioritize. Our nation's biggest interests this week seem to be someone yelling in a diner at a screaming kid, and Nicki Minaj being unhappy about not being nominated for some video award that no one will remember or care about 48 hours after it gets handed out.
