In general, you’d be fine to set traps for animals that you had a legitimate reason to trap like coyote traps around your chicken coops or some such, unless you knew that children regularly trespassed on your land which
might require additional care. If you were in a dispute with hunters and put bear traps out, that wouldn’t fly. There is a certain amount of common sense — the court would try to determine if your intent was to trap animals or to harm trespassers.
Also, for the record, I’m not a lawyer — my wife is and I toyed with reading the law while she was in law school. Property and torts were my favorite subjects.
