Since my card with the 20k limit has about 4k on it right now, I'm thinking about calling Amex and asking for a bit of a bigger starting credit limit since I want to transfer the 4k over to them and that would take up most of my credit limit right away leaving me little room to work with. Anyone ever try this?

The transfer itself is pretty much neutral EV weighing the interest I'd pay before paying it off vs the 3% transfer fee, so it doesn't matter to me if I actually do the transfer or not. Seems like a longshot to work anyway.
I've heard that Amex doesn't reconsider opening limits. But after 61 days, you can request a limit increase online of 3x your opening limit and will most likely get it if your report looks essentially the same as when you opened the card. Worked for me.

They tend to be a bit gunshy with the first card, but that first CLI comes easy and subsequent starting limits on thier cards should be more generous.

In a more general sense, I have read of people having success getting a higher initial CL to accommodate a BT, but not with Amex.

For anyone interested, the US Airways card from Barclays is about to go away. You get 50k miles after first purchase and pay the AF of $89. This quarter it will combine and those will be AAdvantage points. That's pretty much good for 2 RT tickets to anywhere in the US.

I just applied today and got approved after calling recon (I opened an Arrival+ with Barclays in January).

Very good deal with no required spending. Basically $89 for 50k miles.

*semi-rant* I applied for the Club Carlson card about a week ago. Haven't even gotten my card before they announced that they're eliminating the last night free benefit. I know that cards are free to change their terms, but it's pretty shady to cut my redemption rate in half before I've even gotten a chance to earn a point, no? *end semi-rant"

So, what's my play to get max value out of these jerks?

Call and see if they can do anything else for you. Can't hurt.

I got the US Air card about six weeks ago. Just got credited the points. I think the offer is gone now, though, as it's now converted to the Aviator Red card. Wife and I are looking to fly to Spain first class next year, and it's looking good points wise.

Last year we did free flights to Denver, Dallas, Milwaukee, and Cabo San Lucas using various cards/bonuses.

Upcoming trip to NYC in may: 2 round trip flights on Delta paid for through points on Chase Sapphire. 4 nights at the Hyatt Times Square, free using Hyatt Chase card awards. Total of about $2000 paid for using points/bonuses. Good times!

Very nice schlucky!

For anyone out there with a 5% office supplies card, office depot has a glitch (possibly promo?) where visa and amex gift cards are not charging an activation fee. Not many people are blogging about it, probably because it'll get shut down quickly and a little difficult to liquidate, but I figured I'd give people on here a headsup.

I've hit up 3 office depots so far and 4 walmarts to off-load. They are Vanilla cards, so you can only load $49.99 to BB at a time, which sucks. Still, 50k UR + $150 CB on Amex Simply cash for spending some time uploading. Hope it keeps working when I make another trip out tonight!

QFT. Plus the 50k signup bonus is pretty nice. Having the ability to get 5% back at staples and office depot when they do rebates and other things is pretty sweet. Plus you can always do regular MS there and make a small profit is always nice.

I value URs more than cashback, but Amex SimplyCash (same 5% at office supply stores) was a business card that I got auto approved for, so something to keep in mind.

Haven't seen Discover Deals mentioned ITT but that seems like a nice bonus to the already useful 5% categories every quarter. I used my Discover IT at Panera today just because it's 5% on restaurants and got a bonus $1 statement credit. Not bad considering my order was less than $10. There seem to be some actually useful offers there. My only question is are the deals a one time use thing or can I use them over and over again? Couldn't find the answer googling and I'd rather ask here than talk to CS.

I'm currently planning on adding a Chase SP and Freedom after I PC my Quicksilver One next week, as well as a Sallie Mae. But once I meet spend on those I just may go for the Ink. There's so much low hanging fruit in personal credit I haven't given it serious thought, but now that I think about it, it couldn't hurt to establish some business credit.

@d10, good questions, I meant to look through Discover Deals earlier and forgot. Haven't really checked to see what if anything is different between the old ShopDiscover and Discover Deals.

I found the answer, the deals are split into 3 categories, cashback bonus, statement credit, or instant savings. The cashback bonus category is generally an ongoing, multiple use deal. It looks like most of these are additional 5% categories but can go as high as 10-15%. Statement credit and instant savings offers are generally one time use, but the specific terms can be found by reading the fine print on each offer.

Yep a lot of cards have those. Whenever you are doing online shopping its worth checking out. Can get things like 6% off nike, 3% apple, 3% newegg, etc. Pretty good deals.

Going to Europe in about 7 weeks - anyway to get a no-fee based card with no foreign exchange fees for the trip?

There was some discussion about this some posts back. Cap1,Discover,and Barclays all have products that fit that criteria iirc.

Barclays Arrival+ imo. 40k signup bonus if you hit $3k spend in 3 months. No FTF and it is Chip + pin enabled. It's also Mastercard. The annual fee is waived for the first year.
