I was just horsing around on the Capital One credit simulator. Score currently sits at 780, and I simulated "cancel oldest credit card". 12 years old, zero balance. It made the score go to 798. Why could this be?

Guess- the simulator values the lowering your amount of open available credit over the impact on the length of your credit history.

Mine went from 770 to 768 when I simulated cancelling the oldest.

Possible - Some were saying a low utilization is best, but if you have say 20K of unused credit, there is a risk that you could run up some significant debt. So canceling a card reduces that chance. I would guess utilization is not linear.

Dumb question. If my card expires 09/19 does that mean it is done on the first of September? I'm away from the home address, so this may be a pain.

dates on my cards have all been "valid through"

Yup, you're right. I'm a dummy. Websites seem make you give an "expiration" date, which thrrew me off.

Anyone have problems combining Chase points? I'm trying to transfer my wife's points to my Sapphire Reserve account and it won't let me

75k points on SW personal cards and 70k on business. In other words free companion pass if you can come up with $10k spend in 3 months. Never seen an offer that gets you all the way there this early in the year so I plan on jumping on it. Suggestions for getting the business card with no business? Last time I tried I was denied.

I always just put Sole Proprietor, 0 or 1 employees, and $0 income (or whatever the minimum is). Been approved a bunch of times by Chase and Amex.

I'm waiting for further review again. I think last time they said I had too much credit with Chase already but I dropped a card since then without moving the credit limit so maybe this will end differently.

Well, do you have a side business? Like selling stuff on ebay or something?
Sole prop, owner, 1 employee, and revenue 1k, or 5k, or 10k or whatever you want based on the volume of your sales.

As a sole prop they still want your personal income so put your real income there.
Business cards have a different review and underwriting process, so very rarely get automatically approved for most people (although Ink Preferred was just auto approved for me 2 months ago). Most of the time people do not call in and just let the app process (7-10 day message), because the calls tend to be significantly more difficult than personal apps, but some get easy reps who just want to confirm some details.

Here is the flowchart from reddit, I'm not sure if this is fully up to date but when it was it was a humorous but accurate depiction for all chase cards, but especially biz cards:

Bonus whoring credit cards and bank account offers is my side business but I don't think they want to hear that. Thanks for the flowchart. My email doesn't show a timeframe right now but I'll keep checking until it changes.

Pretty much anything is a valid sole prop. Being a sole prop is as easy as just opening the mouth and saying, "I now have a sole prop business that does x". Don't overthink it. Just make sure you are applying with the business name being your first and last name and not under some made up business name that doesn't actually exist.

Worked out this time, no recon call necessary. I think I was just gun shy from my last failed app.

My credit score is north of 800, I just got a medical bill for an outrageous amount. nothing negative at all in my credit history. What would happen to my score if j just refuse to pay it? Would it hurt my chances at getting a mortgage in the future?

Been looking through thread but seems these things change over time, so looking for advice on credit cards.

Just closed on house which I had been waiting to do before messing w/ changing cards. We have one of the 5% amazon cards which we use for pretty much all our non-food shopping. Also a generic bank issued 1% cash back card and a $90ish annual fee American Airlines card which initially got to prevent bunch of miles from expiring, but have been using mostly for free checked bags as we fly 1-2x a year so kind of breaking even in that now.

So need to figure out what to replace the 1% cash back and/or American Airlines with? Credit rating is high 700s and we may easily spend 10k more than usual in next few months due to furnishing a house, so I imagine meeting any sort of reasonable initial promo spending requirement shouldn’t be a big issue.

Sign up bonuses are where the best return comes from. If you're willing to do business cards Chase Ink Preferred is by far the clear option. If only willing to do personal cards there's plenty of options and kind of depends on your goals and needs.

Don’t want to mess with a business card. Not looking to max out ton of bonuses, just want to switch to something better than current 1% cash back. Fly about 2x a year so I do like getting the free bags, but in general guessing I probably wouldn’t make most of a flying centric card.

I know it sounds stupid, but for me I think it’s fun to be able to cash out enough at a time for it to seem exciting (ie go to nice dinner or buy flight or something), so I would rather get $300 once a year than $30/per month for example.

Citi double cash is straight forward, no annual fee 2% cash back. You should qualify at your credit score.

If you can fly delta the Gold Delta Amex would have the same annual fee as your american card and give you a free checked bag + 100$ statement credit on a Delta flight if you spend 10k/Year on the card. May give you some value over the american card in a direct swap if you hit the 10k.

I'm going to assume you do not like high annual fees in general. Chase Sapphire Preferred would be a good option with a $600 cash equivalent bonus (or $750 if you decided to use it towards travel) for 4k spend in 3mo. If you're looking for something very simple with no annual fee there are a lot of options that would work fine and just really depends on where your spending is. Chase freedom will give you 5% in some common rotating categories. Chase freedom unlimited would give you a flat 1.5% back on everything. Both come with a small bonus. Amex Blue Cash Everyday gives 3% back at supermarkets and 2% at gas stations. The citi double cash that was mentioned would be fine also, although imo the user experience is much nicer with chase/amex than citi.

Thanks for the thoughts, I like the concept of of the rewards being travel centric like the chase sapphire compared to getting a little bit knocked off the monthly bill via cash back. Looking at our spending, groceries are a big chunk, would that push us towards any other cards w travel rewards over the chase sapphire?

If you're set on just 1 card go for the signup bonus. If you want to get max benefits from your grocery spend try AmEx Blue Cash Preferred. I'm not sure if that's still the best grocery card but it's pretty good for sure (6%, reasonable annual fee)
