when cancelling credit cards (airlines & hotels) are points lost? to be more specific, in my current case, southwest. I have business cc and personal. currently have Companion P until end of year. business cc AF hit 10/1/16, can i cancel and my points are safe or not?
To be a little more specific than borg:
When you cancel a credit card, you will lose any points provided by that bank, but not airline or hotel points with a partner. For example, if you cancel a Chase Sapphire Preferred, you will lose UR points if you don't transfer them to another card or partner first. For Chase Southwest, Chase deposits/buys points for you with Southwest. Once those points are in your Southwest account, they are out of Chase's hands (for the most part, unless you do something really stupid and Chase wants to pursue legal action).
Southwest points are good for 24 months from the last time you have EARNING activity. Keep in mind that it means using points will not count as activity. You can always go through the Southwest portal and make a small purchase (or free after rebate sometimes!) to keep your points active if you no longer have your Chase Southwest card.
