Meanwhile in Iran:

Quote:
A local cleric from the Iranian city of Qom has suggested a novel cure for the new coronavirus - the pre-bedtime rectal administration of violet leaf oil.

Users on Twitter describe how the Ayatollah Tabrizian has publicly denounced Western medicine as "un-Islamic".

In a post to over 120,000 followers on the social messaging service Telegram, Tabrizian, a purveyor of traditional Islam medicine, listed several alternative techniques for fighting the spread of the contagious disease, known as Covid-19.

According to an Iranian news site, which obtained a screenshot of the message, Tabrizian recommends consuming copious amounts of brown sugar, burning wild rue, as well as inhaling snuff.

His eighth tip is the most striking: "Before bedtime, drench some cotton in violet oil and apply onto your anus"
These super religious guys are always looking for an excuse to stick stuff up their asses.

At least stick some sort of THC/hash oil up your butt instead, that is fun so I have heard.

Don’t forget the buffets.

Buffets are truly terrifying. People shift food around to find the perfect meatball. People pick up a cup/plate only to see a tiny spot and decide to put it back into the pile. The milk/froyo dispensers that get cleaned maybe once a day. Kids shuffle through seemingly every plate of cheesecake to find the perfect slice. Drunk and seasick people vomit.

Now remember these people just came back shore excursions mixing with tens of thousands of tourists in crowded areas daily before going back to the buffets. Now remember cruise ships don’t have the best records with regard to food safety. Now remember right before you boarded the ship, a shipful of tourists just left behind everything they’ve picked up during their voyage.

Uh... they do, or more likely, they get supplies from a distributor.

The distributors on Amazon also get their supplies from the same manufacturers.

The distributors that supply whatever drug store and public medical supply store buys from the same set of manufacturers.

If you have 10 manufacturers, and now 1000 distributors are all increasing their orders by an order of magnitude, the manufacturers can't keep up with the new demand. They can't add tooling and keep a profit, nor can they find a tooling manufacturer that can build new machines soon enough to matter.

Even if they could, they would have to get the materials from somewhere. The cloth and bands have to come from somewhere, and those somewhere manufacturers have to get their raw materials from somewhere else.

That somewhere else has to cut down trees, dig holes, do chemistry, or whatever, to get the raw materials. They can't magically increase their supply with zero notice either.

Over-simplistic description of supply chains, but the buck stops somewhere.

Are you sure that it wasn't, "I don't believe that God will intervene." (and 'good for you to stock up' implied)?

I live in a town w/ a church practically on every corner. We even have a Chabad center now thanks to a real pioneer who set up shop 15 years ago when there were only ten Jews in this town.

Tonight I'm going to Target and am going to buy all of

that I can fit into the cart.

You know you can just order from Walmart and free shipping on over $35 in 2 days and likely cheaper also.

I haven't been to a store in forever.

Hamsterkauf

The word Hamsterkauf, a noun made up of [the German words for] “hoarding” (hamstern) and “buy” (kaufen) has been trending on social media as people share photos of store shelves cleared out of food and other household items. The word “hamstern” comes from the hamster, which stores food in its cheeks.

Imagine an American finding out half the world uses water instead of TP, and 20% more throw TP in the trash because the pipes can't handle it (IE - you can use anything in a pinch).

I was at a Sam's Club yesterday and as I was leaving the TP/Paper Towel isle which was more empty than I'd ever seen a lady came around the corner, stopped, and exclaimed, "No Charmin?!?!?" as she saw the empty place where pallets of Charmin normally sit. I laughed and said, "it's the end of civilization, guess we'll have to make due with Member's Mark Premium TP."

This was 5 minutes after the store opened.

There was zero canned chicken or spam left. Still lots of canned tuna though. They also normally have about 4 pallets of different kinds of rice in 25 and 50 pound bags. They had one pallet left and it was maybe 75% gone when I walked by. Again, this was 5 minutes after the store opened yesterday.

Also looking forward to when Americans realize you can buy rice at places other than Costco or Sam's Town.

Okay, so we're up to 6 deaths in Washington, 4 of whom were in the same nursing home. Seems like this is gonna be tough on the olds. There are only 18 confirmed cases in Washington so far. We know from China that the mean time from infection to death is 20 days so this must have been on the West coast for a while.

There seems to be a real lack of of outrage about the lack of response over there in a way that's a little hard for me to fathom. Being super optimistic 6 deaths should mean at least ~150 infected so the only way you get 18 confirmed cases is by a severe lack of testing. Those are stats you'd laugh at if they were put out by a 3rd world dictatorship, I'd have thought the U.S citizenry would hold it's government to a higher standard than this regardless of their perception of the president. By putting out those stats they're basically admitting they're letting a high number of carriers go about their business unchecked and are allowing the widespread transmission of this thing.

The 18 confirmed cases just shows the US isn't testing until you show up at the hospital with severe symptoms.

I'm supposed to be going on holiday to denver next week from the uk and i'm seriously considering cancelling despite having spent more money on it than I should have. I'm struggling to see a scenario where this isn't spreading like wildfire all over the US right now.
