Uh... I don't think there is much we can do to prevent the spread entirely and snuff the virus out per se. But I am hoping this is an event that will improve global hygiene significantly.

Making it a social norm to wear masks during flu season will save a **** ton of lives.
Chinese authorities finally cleaning up their food safety practices (just go on YouTube, it won't take long for you to find freshly slaughtered pigs just sitting on a table at room temperature, sometimes with flies buzzing around) will significantly lower the probabiliy we get another animal to human transmission out of China annually.
Getting a bigger sense of urgency to finally develop anti-viral meds for flu/corona viruses will really help us fight the next pandemic.

Sooner or later we'll get a bastard of a virus that has a long incubation period but with the deadliness of Avian flu or ebola. Thankfully Covid-19 isn't it. Covid-19 exposing weaknesses in our disease response system may actually end up saving a ton of lives.

So the Chinese government "convinced" The Lancet to retract an article/plea for help written by some nurses in Wuhan. It contradicts the PRC's official stance that everything in Wuhan is getting better. The article is, um, concerning.

Quote:
On Jan 24, 2020, we came to Wuhan, China, to support the local nurses in their fight against the COVID-19 infection. We entered the Wuhan isolation ward as the first batch of medical aid workers from Guangdong Province, China. The daily work we are doing is mainly focused on provision of oxygen, electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, tube care, airway management, ventilator debugging, central venous intubation, haemodialysis care, and basic nursing care such as disposal and disinfection.

The conditions and environment here in Wuhan are more difficult and extreme than we could ever have imagined. There is a severe shortage of protective equipment, such as N95 respirators, face shields, goggles, gowns, and gloves. The goggles are made of plastic that must be repeatedly cleaned and sterilised in the ward, making them difficult to see through. Due to the need for frequent hand washing, several of our colleagues' hands are covered in painful rashes. As a result of wearing an N95 respirator for extended periods of time and layers of protective equipment, some nurses now have pressure ulcers on their ears and forehead. When wearing a mask to speak with patients, our voices are muted, so we have to speak very loudly. Wearing four layers of gloves is abnormally clumsy and does not work—we can't even open the packaging bags for medical devices, so giving patients injections is a huge challenge. In order to save energy and the time it takes to put on and take off protective clothing, we avoid eating and drinking for 2 hours before entering the isolation ward. Often, nurses' mouths are covered in blisters. Some nurses have fainted due to hypoglycaemia and hypoxia.

In addition to the physical exhaustion, we are also suffering psychologically. While we are professional nurses, we are also human. Like everyone else, we feel helplessness, anxiety, and fear. Experienced nurses occasionally find the time to comfort colleagues and try to relieve our anxiety. But even experienced nurses may also cry, possibly because we do not know how long we need to stay here and we are the highest-risk group for COVID-19 infection. So far 1716 Chinese staff have been infected with COVID-19 and nine of them have unfortunately passed away. Due to an extreme shortage of health-care professionals in Wuhan, 14 000 nurses from across China have voluntarily come to Wuhan to support local medical health-care professionals. But we need much more help. We are asking nurses and medical staff from countries around the world to come to China now, to help us in this battle.

If we can just slow the spread enough where the health care systems don't get overloaded and everyone can get treatment that needs it, that is a win. And really the realistic goal of this thing in my eyes.

But it helps if everyone is bought in and cares about it.

And +1 to improving social norms around personal hygiene and other health measures.

No, but it's over-reacting to follow all news events about driving obsessively, cancel all events that require driving, and get yourself a genuine shyster-made homeopathic car-repellent crystal.

In a short while you will have to say OMG CALIFORNIA HAS 500k cases and people are losing their minds!
Yeah, I've never said that Cali won't get to 500k cases. I have no idea why you think that I said no one will catch this thing. But let's say 500K in Cali catch it, and lets give the (imo pessimistic) 2% death rate. That's 1K deaths. Sucks, I agree, but it's still less than 1/3 of the annual Cali motor vehicle fatalities.

Ok so you just don't care no matter what occurs because there are people that die in auto accidents. Well I guess I can't really argue with that. So I guess we just part ways here. :handshake:

A dog in Hong Kong has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus that’s killed at least 2,859 humans across the world over the last two months, World Health Organization officials said Friday.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, the technical lead of WHO’s emergencies program, said the canine tested “weakly positive,” meaning low levels of the virus were found.

Hong Kong scientists aren’t sure if the dog is actually infected or if it picked up the virus from a contaminated surface, she said.

“We’re working with them to understand the results, to understand what further testing they are doing and to understand how they are going to care for these animals,” Kerkhove said during a press conference at WHO’s headquarters in Geneva.

California has 40 million people. 500k would be 1 in 80 people. I think it'll be much more widespread than that (i know you didn't choose 500k).

Looking at the cruise ship for an example:

Quote:
705 people from the ship containing 3,711 people have now contracted COVID-19, with it becoming increasingly apparent that the quarantine protocols on the ship were poorly enforced and wholly inadequate to protect passengers. The 705 cases are thought to stem from just one man from Hong Kong who was a passenger on the ship in late January and later tested positive for the virus after returning home.
19% of the passengers are infected, 6 deaths so far, 0.8% fatality rate.

If we pull those numbers straight over to California for fun we get 7.6 million infected and 61,000 dead.

“You are more likely to die of influenza today”

Sure, you are more likely to catch influenza today. But the deaths in the US from corona have a good chance to be multiple times that from flu over the next 3 months.

If 20% of the US gets it that’s 70M and if it kills even just 1% that’s 700,000 deaths.

stupid question pls answer

if you are "healthy" and you contact the virus, do you have to go to the hospital or docter or can you just chill at home with meds and in a few days or a week it goes away? kinda like a nomral cold or flu
