It did feel weird. There were army people running it. If the government ever forced everyone to take a DNA test to track the population and crimes I imagine it would be just like that.

Here, the self test is two parts from what I understand, swab the throat and then swab the upper nasal passage. You have to do both otherwise the test is useless.

The test I was given was made by Curative.

You swabbed the inside of your cheeks and gums just like a DNA test. We were told not to suck on the stick like a lolly pop, so I guess they aren't testing from saliva.

Sucky story in Australia.

Australia went hard at a suppression strategy which involved closing off all the state borders and the international one. Most states put in professional units such as army and special forces to work security for hotels and other quarantine facilities for anyone coming into each state.

Victoria (2nd most populous state) did not, instead hiring some cheap private firm who gave 5 minutes training to each guard.

TL;DR a few guards slept with the quarantined people, let others out into the community and got themselves sick, and the complete botch job means that half of Victoria is now locked down again.

Meanwhile, in my state, we are going to have crowds of 30k crowds from this week and in two weeks upped to 60k as we haven't had a single community transmission case in months.

The Australian Football League (Aussie Rules) has 10 of its 18 teams based in Victoria, and now they are all going to have to move out to other states to continue the season.

I have questions that I have tried to find answers to but there is either no good info I can find, or the info varies. For example, what is the longest this can live on surfaces/clothing/shoes etc? One site says up to 4 days, another says 7. Also, at what temp does the virus die? If something is frozen that has the virus on it, will it die or just become inactive until is is thawed? For example if you put food in the freezer that has the virus on it, will it never die because it is frozen?

Any help would be appreciated. I take care of an elderly person with many serious health issues and we are both self isolating. Her main concern is that food or packaging might bring covid into her home.

afaik there are no great answers to your questions, especially the freezer one. people just don't know yet.

but the current thinking is that surfaces are pretty safe. and most of the germs will die on most surfaces in just a few hours, but can last several days. the longer the better obviously. i've been doing 3 days.

and i think it dies at a very low temperature, as in anything cooked will be fine.

it's mainly transmitted from sharing air. if you can stay away from sharing indoor air with people, you should be fine

sorry i couldn't be more help

Sorry, the 2 friends in my post didnt have health insurance. I texted the one who broke his neck, it was actually his back and he paid less than $25k but he can remember it's been 10 years. The other only paid for the ambulance to the hospital.

We don't strictly know how long the virus survives on surfaces in various conditions. It is probably no more persistent than any common-cold virus. Freezing will do it no favours at all and cooking is going to kill it.

This is a common fear, but it's believed to be unlikely, as long as you follow normal hygiene precautions with foodstuffs. The US FDA advice on food packaging is:-

Quote:
Again, there is no evidence of food packaging being associated with the transmission of COVID-19. However, if you wish, you can wipe down product packaging and allow it to air dry, as an extra precaution.
For the full advice in regard to food:-
https://www.fda.gov/food/food-safety...tion-consumers

The UK advice is:-

Quote:
If you have been shopping, there should be no need to sanitise the outer packaging of food. This is because food businesses are required to have a system for managing food safety in place, which should include keeping packaging clean. You should still follow good hygiene practice by washing your hands after handling any outer packaging. If you have reason to believe the packaging has been contaminated, you should follow the recommended cleaning guidance.
And:-

Quote:
It is very unlikely that you can catch coronavirus from food. You should follow good hygiene and preparation practices when handling and eating raw fruit, leafy salads and vegetables. This includes washing fresh produce to help to remove any contamination on the surface. Peeling the outer layers or skins of certain fruits and vegetables can also help to remove surface contamination. We would remind you not to wash raw chicken or other meat as this can lead to cross-contamination in your kitchen.

It is important to wash your hands with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds before and after you prepare food.
Full text here:- https://www.gov.uk/government/public...id-19-and-food

Washing your hands, and washing fruit and vegetables, like people ought to do anyway, should take care of business. You can wipe down packaging if you want, but it may just make you more anxious. Hope you and your co-isolator are doing OK.

This place is constantly busy. Drove by last weekend and there were at least 20 people in line. They probably have 5-8 employees working at a time in a fairly small space if anyone is familiar with them.

He could no longer breathe unassisted. I don't think they had to put him on a ventilator (in an induced coma), but they did have to put him on an oxygen mask. The risk factor in his case seems to have been his obesity. For some reason, obese patients are at far greater risk if they contract Covid-19. (Bad luck, Florida.)

I've been skeptical about the notion that the virus may have mutated to become less fatal.

But it does now sound like many scientists, including Fauci, believe the virus has mutated to become more contagious. I've linked to an article below describing this. There is less evidence about the severity of the mutation. But as I understand it, there is often a trade-off between the contagiousness of a virus and its severity, and one scientist quoted in the article at least speculates along the same lines.

Quote:
"The current work suggests that while the G614 variant may be more infectious, it is not more pathogenic. There is a hope that as SARS-CoV-2 infection spreads, the virus might become less pathogenic."

In general there is evolutionary pressure on viruses to become less deadly, because a live host spreads the virus better, which may be what this person is referring to. But any random mutation could go either way wrt to lethality.

Down to 38 cases daily in my county over past 2 weeks, less than half what it was a month ago. Avg 1 death per day since June 14th, almost all over 80 years of age.

I guess that due to the massive number of protestors in Philly and the surrounding areas a few weeks ago that we may get a temporary rise in the near future.

I don't think it was in this thread but I posted somewhere that this is the general observation some doctor friends of the family have been saying for some time now. Which is of course good news if it's being observed elsewhere too.
