If it's part of Nick's controlled exposure towards herd immunity then this is a fine group to start with.
Good plan Trump!

Reasons to wait until January:

-Legitimate chance of a vaccine by then.
-Most colleges are woefully unprepared to deal with any outbreaks on campus.
-We just conducted half a semester online, with zero preparation time or advance warning, and it for the most part went fine.
-Instead of contingency plans, colleges could focus on delivering the best possible online instruction.
-Parents and students would know in advance what to expect for the fall, instead of the current uncertainty of will they or won't they.
-Colleges will spend millions on social distancing measures that will potentially only be needed for 3 months.
-Faculty, staff, and even some students will likely die in the rush to get back one semester sooner.
Apparently my university will announce plans for the fall on June 8th. The latest proposal I am hearing is for in-person classes operating at 50% of less classroom capacity. I have no idea how they would accomplish this given that we already have a classroom shortage.

I am also hearing they want to move the whole semester slightly earlier so that it will end before Thanksgiving. Which is fine by me, but I’m really not sure what the point is with regard to the virus.

FWIW, our area has not been seriously directly affected by the virus; we have only one recorded covid death in our county.

They haven't. You've just created an unfalsifiable premise where if a city with a high infection rate brings R below 1 you say it's from immunity and if a city with a low infection rate brings R below 1 you handwave and say it's from other factors which prevented the pandemic from ever taking hold in the first place and not that the city just acted early and crushed the curve.

No, don't wait until the height of flu season. Winter is COVID season from now on. Summer is the time to do everything. For many of us these may be the last few months of our lives before the more deadly second wave in fall.

Let's go to Hawaii, isolate 14 days, then it's carefree island life.

the idea is to reduce travel. they don't want kids flying home for thanksgiving and coming back to campus with the virus.

Good post. Iíve already been asked to move my classes entirely online for Fall. Itís so much better for everyone to know earlier. We are also changing Learning Management Systems in July, so will be painful. Students and our department are thankful for some earlier clarity though.

Re: The Coronavirus Prep/Sweat thread. What are you doing to save yourself?

I have two middle school aged children and received a call from their school yesterday regarding a survey to all parents. They wanted to know if my children had specifically

1) reliable internet connection
2) access to a functional computer with webcam capability
3) access to a functional tablet device with webcam capability

after answering I inquired if she could provide me more info on the purpose of the survey and she just said the state was gathering info about available learning tech in each students home. hard to imagine this isn't covid related and that they're not looking into some form of partial schooling from home.

It seems like making sure that every kid has internet access and a webcam at home, largely unsupervised, is going to lead to some big problems.

Re: The Coronavirus Prep/Sweat thread. What are you doing to save yourself?

Tomorrow, USA #1 will speed past 100,000 C-19 deaths.

Roughly 4.2% of the world population has about 28.7% of the reported world C-19 deaths.

Yes, China has lied. Probably India, too. Maybe many other countries. However, for the numbers to even out (i.e. 4.2% of world pop, 4.2% of world Rona deaths), there'd have to be a little over 2.32M C-19 deaths worldwide. The world count stands at about 343K as of this post.

What an absolute **** show.

Congrats to that guy from earlier in the thread for cashing his over bet, I guess.

The epidemic started later in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Brazil, but right now cases and deaths are increasing exponentially in all these countries, and it is unclear when and if any of them will turn the corner. Brazil in particular looks very likely to come out of this looking much worse than the US in a month or two.

This is of course not to say that the US reacted to this well at all. But it is waaaaay too early to judge the impact in the global south.

Also utterly depressing that we'd be looking to countries such as these to even up the vast disparity in U.S. deaths. In other words, yeah, we're completely retarded, but wait until 3rd and 4th world countries get a taste of this thing! Then we'll see how....something...the U.S. is. I thought USA was #1?!

If I was Yanklandia, I would be expecting to come out way better than India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Brazil.

Hey guys these third world/second world countries might still do worse than us.

OK, but when you make a comparison between the US population and the world population, you are implicitly making a comparison to the global south, because most of the worldís population lives in the global south.

Latest US vs. European average death graphs.

European numbers are looking pretty great, with deaths declining at a consistent 20-25% per week for at least the last month.
US deaths are showing slower declines at around 15% per week.
