I believe you're supposed to spray down, from behind. Don't come in from the front and spray up. That's why my Indian boss told me anyway when we were over there and I asked how it worked in case I got caught in a bathroom w/o TP.
The part few will actually tell you though - is that it the water scoop only works in combination with the hand (always left). Jets are a new invention. For 1000s of years it was left hand and scoop. Which is why they never touch food with their left hand. But tell me how you make a samosa with one hand?
My boss said to most Indians - smearing it all over your butt with TP seems much grosser. I can see that.
The built in toilet ones in Japan spray up. But just make sure you are covering the bowl well.
