Covid has now killed more US citizens than WWI, a war that lasted 4 years.

That's a bit misleading. Yes, the WWI lasted 4 years and killed million of Europeans, but the US didn't enter until three years into it and didn't have major troop engagements until the last few months. US casualties were minuscule compared to the major European combatant powers.

let me clarify - Covid has now killed more US citizens than US citizens killed in WWI
Covid: 133,666
WWI: 116,708

Yeah, I didn't say it was wrong, just misleading. The vast majority of those US WWI casualties came in just a few months, not stretched out over four years (in both cases).

At least we tried winning that war.

Plus WWI mean age of death was 27 with a mode of 19. If everyone dying of covid had 40 years left to live our response would be diff- . . . well I guess we'll see when we get there in a couple months.

I suppose the biggest point is we’re able to compare the current death numbers to historical records.
doesn’t matter if it was a world war or a global pandemic that happened a hundred years ago, it’s more than apparent the loss of human life at a historical scale means nothing to the very people that can control the situation.

Maybe it is a sign of Trump having succes with his retoric that even those who are opposed to everything he stands for are arguing that masks are high on the list of concerns.
Whats the mask situation like at the grocery store in Denmark?

Trump handlers had to know the stable genius was gonna screw this up, and they were right.

Trump simply had no chance of getting thru a few minutes of photo ops without screwing it up.

Trump won't have a mask on again. One and done!

There are earlier pics ITT of him wearing it correctly. So, not sure what the excuse is for the schnoz.

Trump simply was cheating on how to properly wear a mask.

I think most of us have cheated on how to properly wear a mask.

But most of us were not engaging in a photo op, and most of us could have kept out act together longer than Trump.

Trump's handlers needed to outfit him with a mask that has the elongated middle section that automatically covers the nose area.

It's like every photo op Trump does, he finds a way to screw it up.

No masks, the staff at check out is wearing gloves and are behind a plastic wall.

Trades like hair dressers, beauty salons and off course medical staff are using masks and/or visors, also saw a driving instructor the other day with a visor.

Health authorities had something like 5000 people wearing masks in public for a couple of weeks back in april to see if there was any significant reason to do so, I guess there wasn't.
They did how ever change their recommendations a bit two days ago to now say that if you have no other way to protect others and you suspect you have covid then you should wear one.

To be honest, when I can't test it myself, I don't much trust "actual scientific knowledge" from the internet, especially when it disagrees with the consensus of experts we pay to deal with this sort of thing.

That trust has now been eroded, though it doesn't add to how much I trust random utubers. If the CDC was lying, that's horrifying. If they were just flailing due to the unusual situation and based on previous corona-virus behavior, it's disappointing, as they are supposed to be our experts, but given how much contradictory info was flying around, well... misfeasance is less bad than malfeasance.

I'm 100% on team mask now. Though I don't expect it to be highly effective at protecting me, it can't hurt and might help on that. But now that we know about asymptomatic spreading, I wear a mask to protect others in case I'm sick and don't know it. Plus, it sends a social distancing message.
Well that's exactly my point. The things the CDC was saying were ridiculous to those of us in science/medicine. By saying stupid/wrong **** they drowned us out. I think that they were lying because that's less discomforting to me than thinking that they don't employ people that have a ****ing clue how disease spreads and masks work. They're the CDC!

About the only unexpected thing about COVID so far has been the blood clots. There really hasn't been anything fancy that should have tripped the CDC/WHO up so badly.

(And I wouldn't post any "random" youtubes. I went and sought out high quality videos that explained the concept i was talking about because people weren't understanding what i was saying via text. It took me a lot of time and I was salty about your comments for like 4 months but water-under-the-bridge.)

Face masks in shops will not be mandatory in England, Gove suggests
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-gove-suggests

We basically has an issue, a bit like Trump, that split the country across intellectual capacity lines e.g. Brexit. The current government is made up of Brexit purists, e.g. the most stupid people in politics.

This explains the entirety of the failure of the UK response and our huge death rate.

Just to be clear, I have criticised focus on masks as if they are a silver bullet, but of course they are something that contributes to lower R rate or whatever and mandatory use in indoor public spaces is an absolute no brainer. Its not something that is in anyway ambiguous. Just ****ing do it.

Agreed.... everyone should understand that masks are not a cure, but that they help reduce the spread. The problem is, we can't even get a good portion of the population to agree that they are worth wearing for even 15 minutes while inside of a grocery store.

A lot of the people clamoring for masks just want that to be the minimum, if we can't even get consensus on that, the how can we expect anything more?

The sad thing is, I'd say +60% of our population don't understand why wearing a mask is important, and if they did know it'd just be more of an incentive for them not to wear one.

Posted in Trump thread as well, so sorry for those who see it twice:

I got curbside takeout from a Mexican restaurant on Thursday.

Guy comes out to confirm my order (after I called in from the parking spot) wearing a mask properly and takes my CC.

Lady comes out for the car next to me with her mask below her nose. As she approaches the car, she takes the mask off to talk to the person in the car next to me. When done confirming his order, proceeds to put the mask back on (under her nose obv) to walk back inside.

A different lady delivered my food wearing a mask properly. If I would have gotten the lady who went to the car next to me, probably woulda been a $0 tip.
