I'm with Garick and Tom Ames.

On a more serious note, going to Ireland in a couple weeks. Hope the flights continue running and the borders stay open.

Other than that, something's gonna kill me. May as well be coronavirus.

Hey, maybe I'll see you in Ireland. Going to be there 11-18 March. Keep an eye out for the guy in a micro-brewery T-shirt and give me a "sup bro" if you spot me.

Exactly, it's amazing how this is a poker forum yet people are so quickly swayed by this "logic"

It's like comparing $ won between a guy that has logged 8 million hands and another that has 5k. And because the 5k guy's $ won is lower saying that he sucks compared to the other guy.

And then everyone else agreeing with this awesome logic. But keep going guys you're doing good.

I also love the classic "I'm going to die anyways so let's all walk out in front of a bus." argument.

Those two things are not remotely the same.

Herp derp. Intentionally taking an action which may end in death is in no way remotely comparable to being exposed to a virus, over which one has little control.

The bright side is if you're young it's not that bad. 0.2% death rate for the 10-39 age group. Zero deaths worldwide for children 0-9 so far at least for the first 70k cases reported.

14%+ death rate for folks 80+ years old. I think it's ~95% of deaths come from age 50+ group and 80%+ come from age 60+ group.

0.2% is still really bad compared to the flu though because the flu death rate for 20-39 year olds is probably 0.01% or lower.

Another chilling stat I've seen is the death rate in Hubei province where most of the cases happen is over 4% while the rest of China it's less than 1%. This suggests that if a health system gets over stressed the death rate sky rockets. 80% of cases are mild and require no medical attention but 20% are severe with 5%+ needing major medical intervention to prevent death. Slowing the spread of the virus is very important to smooth out the infection rate so the health care system doesn't collapse.

I've been following Marc Lipsitch on Twitter for a while and he's been pretty much spot-on so far. He's a Harvard epidemiologist and he calls a lot of bullshit on things you read in the press. Unfortunately, he's been saying for some time that he doesn't think the China containment approach is working / is going to work. He predicts ultimately between 40-70% of the world's population is going to catch Covid-19. On the plus side, he doesn't really think the fatality rate will end up being 2%.

I really hope so. That would be a relief.

It will only remain under 2% if the health care system doesn't get over stressed. 20% of cases require medical attention and 5% or so require major medical intervention. It's also not like the flu where it clears up in 3-6 days even if you get hospitalized. This thing is keeping people in critical condition for 2-3 weeks if it's serious.

It is incredibly important to slow the spread of the virus to smooth infection rates out so the health system doesn't collapse. Also, I've seen medical experts say if they could get sick anywhere they'd choose China because of how fast they've responded by increasing their capacity to deal with massive numbers of critical respiratory cases. There's only 100k ICU beds in the entire USA...

Or it suggests that many cases in Hubei went unreported, as lots of people had it before everyone with symptoms was getting tested, and only the worst cases sought medical attention.

Or both, of course.

Yeah, you all want face masks. You know there is no evidence that suggests they are effective?

So, one of my buddies is stuck baby sitting a dog for his coworker. She went to China, and due to coronavirus, she had to travel to Thailand and stay there for 2 weeks before she's allowed back in the US.

Lame article, talking about airborne bugs. Corona is not airborne, it's in fluids like saliva and mucus, particle masks do the job.

Nope. According to the CDC, masks are effective when worn by the ill to keep others from catching it, as it prevents fluids from going out of the body in aerosol form, but don't work for avoiding the disease if you're not sick, as once the contaminants are aerosolized, a mask doesn't keep them out.

CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms.

The big unknown is the number of people who are infected who remain either asymptomatic or have only fairly minor symptoms. We know for sure that there are people like this and we know that they aren't being counted now. What we don't know is how many people are like this. Many experts think there are lots of them who aren't being counted yet.

2% is the absolute max really as we don't actually know how many people are infected. If you're in China and feeling kinda sick would you go in and get tested? That's a ticket to a 14-day quarantine in a "hospital".

So it depends what kind of mask you're talking about. Particle masks, like n95 masks, will do a good job protecting the wearer from viruses because they filter that **** out (along with drywall dust, soot, etc). They will not protect other people from the wearer because they have valves that allow your breath to stream out unfiltered.

Surgical masks will protect other people from the wearer pretty well. This is why they are worn in the OR, to stop your bacteria breath from entering an open surgical wound. But they won't protect the wearer. They will, however, stop you from touching your face, which is good.

If we could get everybody to wear surgical masks that would be pretty good. You're not wearing it to protect you; you're wearing it to protect everybody else. Of course, that kind of thinking doesn't really appeal to non-medical Americans and it's definitely not the reason that every pharmacy in the country is sold out of surgical masks.

N95 doesn’t filter the virus out, not after it has been aerosolized.

However, it is effective in blocking 99% of the stuff if someone sneezes in your face and somewhat effective in discouraging yourself from touching your nose and mouth. Nonetheless, most of what I’ve read suggests it doesn’t help that much. Washing hands constantly is way more effective.

I still think its just a good idea for societies to adopt the habit anyway because you may already be sick and don’t know it. Wearing masks may not do much to protect you from sick people but if we collectively all do it, we will probably save a whole lot of lives lost to the flu and (soon) covid-19 every year.

n95s are most definitely effective vs viruses. Why do you think that they aren't?
