It’s not useless but the virus is small enough to get through. It does block droplets that hasn’t been aeroslized but surgical masks can do that almost as well unless someone is pretty much sneezing into the gaps of your mask. A lot of what I read basically says N95 doesn’t work for disease prevention basically because nobody can wear it correctly for more than maybe an hour before they touch it/take it off. For healthcare professionals trained to use the masks, I think it’s appropriate when they see patients. But everything I’ve read suggests N95 is impractical for everyday use.

Tradesmen wear N95 masks all the time and it's fine. They're able to keep their lungs from being filled with drywall or insulation. I don't see why a regular person couldn't wear one when they go out in public.

Virus particles being really small actually means the mask is super good at catching them. It's bigger particles that are the hardest to catch. (This youtoob is really good)

The thing about this flu is that it seems to easily infect the lungs which makes olds and other parts of the population with compromised respiratory systems particularly vulnerable.

Given how much of a head start the virus has and the amount of international travel taking place out of China and around the world it's only a matter of time before an outbreak of this bird flu happens somewhere near you.

Wash your hands frequently. If you have to cough, cover you mouth. Try not to touch you mouth, nose, eyes, face when in public if you can help it. Use shoulders and elbows to open doors, use common sense, etc.

A former ambassador to the Vatican has died and other lower level officials also are positive.

I mean yeah it's not 100% protection. But I'm not buying that it's 0% better than having your bare face exposed.

Either way I think all would agree that for the purposes of slowing the spread of it we'd be better off if everyone wearing a mask was the norm rather than the exception.

I'm one of those people that never get sick and then drop dead suddenly to everyone's surprise.

The irony here is that I'd self-excluded from the casino as my only defense against my inability to avoid Black Jack. That ban ends in mid April and I was really looking forward to going back and sticking to poker but now there's a decent chance that the entire country will get locked down and I'll be doomed to more time w/ nothing better to do than feed my mother low sodium tomato soup.

Got to stock up on that, too.

Thought n95 masks blocked it. Whatever, I ripped the p100 mask out of the olds hand anyway at the store and I have that now. Worst case, I figure I'm painting the downstairs anyway and can use it then.

Really surprised they still had some on the shelves, esp. since I live in old beach community. If it hits here, it's going to be bad -- there's already a shortage of doctors and this town skews way old, so the beds will fill up fast. Alarm bells here aren't going off yet.

It’s obv a long running joke but I’ve often wondered if regging the disgusting live pokers environment theoretically benefits (or hurts?) the immune system, and if so is the effect substantial either way. I’d like to think we’re more geared for this virus than average person...
