Probably not the smartest approach and I hope it works out but yeah, I've been to a large Bull and Oyster roast, been to several bars/restaurants to see live music and have enjoyed myself.

I'm really testing the vaccine's efficacy.

Is there a readily available antibody test or something to check my status?
There are antibody tests but I don't see the point, if you're recently fully vaccinated you almost certainly have antibodies. The question is, could you encounter a strain of the virus that can evade those antibodies?

Uh, oh. It looks like the J&J vaccine may cause serious side effects, too.

US recommends 'pause' for J&J vaccine over clot reports

They just paused them at Walmart. Man giving me my vax says “they just told us we can’t give these out anymore but I can give you yours if you want it”

Well that’s reassuring. Give me that danger spike baby.

This seems like a poor decision: one woman died and one other is in critical condition from the blood clot issue, and just 6 clot cases have arisen in 6.8 million doses. How many additional people will die if regulatory authorities pause the J&J vaccine?

Old fashioned trolley problem.

In Russia, government statistics show over 360,000 “excess deaths” in 2020. The finding strongly suggests Russia sought to cover up the true toll of the pandemic, as it reported just 57,000 deaths from COVID-19 last year.
unrelated to the quote, i heard that birth control pills cause way more clots than jnj vax

If people dying of extremely rare blod clots were the only consideration, then this would clearly be a bad decision. I'm sure you have a greater chance of dying from in a car wreck on your way to the vaccination center than you do of dying from a blood clot caused by the J&J vaccination.

From a public health perspective, the real risk is that highly publicized reports of rare side effects might discourage people from getting the vaccine. The best rationale for a pause would be if it was necessary to maintain public confidence in vaccine safety.

Thinking about it a little more, other possible rationales might be to work out treatment options for those suffering from blood clots, or to publicize the idea that if you've gotten the J&J and see certain symptoms, get yourself to a doctor pronto. Or to see how many additional blood clots arise from the many J&J vaccines given in the last week to ten days, given that clotting issues don't seem to arise for a week or more after the jab.

Blood clots are rare, even among birth control users. The rate for getting clots is about 0.3% to 1% over 10 years for a woman on the pill. You're much more likely to have blood clots during or after pregnancy
Quote:
Young women are most likely to have a birth control-related blood clot when they've just recently started taking it. “From the first several months up to the first year is the highest-risk time period because your hormone levels are actually changing,” Dr. Hornacek says.
from a quick google.

so that is about a billion times more likely to get blood clots from birth control pill

Unsurprisingly, birth control has been shifting away from the pill for awhile now because messing with your hormones can have terrible side effects. My gf has the copper IUD thing.

Got my first shot of Pfizer today, 2nd shot is 3 months away (loleurope). Information online seems a bit conflicting, is there a consensus on how likely you're to infect someone else with covid after getting vaccinated yourself? Basically I'd like to visit my soon 64yo relative finally after the 2-3-week period of building up immunity, but because this is loleurope she's not vaccinated and I am. How risky would this be as opposed to if I wasn't vaccinated?

Also what's people's general outlook on how you plan to change your habits after dose # 1 but before dose #2? I guess this isn't such a big deal for Americans since you only have 3-4 weeks between doses, but I have 3 months and the summer is halfway over before I get dose #2. Do you guys feel safe enough to travel a bit, go to small bars, gyms, restaurants etc after dose 1?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I got the call to get vaccinated out of nowhere, I wasn't expecting to get a shot for another few months (loleurope) so I haven't really followed the thread

This, but of course many will choose to stay willfully uninformed. Shocking, I know.

Not picking on you personally, but I am so ****ing tired of this take.

Once someone irl says this to me, and many have, they are instantly on my dullard idiot list.

I got my first yesterday. I will make no changes until I get the second dose. Of course I only have a 3 week wait. After that, I’m going back to life as normal. I’ll still wear a mask and all that but I will be done being cautious. Anybody in this state can get a vaccine now. So I’m not going to worry about it.

Chuck:

These may help -- two separate data points that suggest that a single mRNA jab is significantly protective.

https://www.jns.org/study-even-one-d...ad-and-spread/

https://www.sciencenews.org/article/...ission-disease

I've had one Moderna jab and have another one scheduled ten days out. A friend of mine needs a car driven from Washington, DC to New Orleans, and it happens that my daughter is in college there. The only time I can realistically go is before my second jab, but I'm 95% sure I'm going to do it -- and then take her out to a nice dinner with her friends after I get there. Several hotel stays and meals out for the trip, obviously. So in my case, I'm definitely willing to live pretty normally after the first mRNA jab. Demographically, I'm 57 and in good health with no cormorbidities, and everyone near me has been vaccinated so transmission risk at home etc. isn't an issue. Just my two cents, obviously.

I'm not as innately hostile as 27, but he's right about this. With all respect, it's logically a side question to the point at issue. You might as well say that you're as likely to be bitten by a shark or struck by lightning as you are to get a clotting issue from J&J.

My company was offering the J&J shot this morning to anyone who wanted it at the office. After the news came out, they were able to pivot to the Moderna and have the follow-up appointment in 3 weeks. Clearly ample vaccine supply in AZ/USA.

I am most definitely in the innately hostile phase of my covid journy.

One year+ lost and >500k dead and people still talking about the flu and car accidents will do that!

Increase your hostility as you think about challenge trials for vaccines and what we should have done rather than blindly follow our bureaucratic rules.

No, I am doing exactly what pokeraz is doing. A few more weeks and I'm done. You're preaching to the choir, though.

After that, I honestly don't care if people die of covid or a car accident. Not my pig, not my farm.

Because I am a dullard idiot, I suppose, i'm going to need you to explain to me why I'm a dullard idiot.

I am not arguing that if we accept the risk of activity X (dying in a car crash on the way to the vaccination center), then we necessarily should accept or be indifferent to the lesser risk of activity Y (getting the J&J vaccine), regardless of the benefits of activity Y or how quickly the risks of activity Y could be lessened or mitigated.

If the benefits of the J&J vaccine were trivial, or if the risk could be minimized or eliminated at little cost to society, then of course it wouldn't much matter much how the risk of activity Y compared to activity X. The obvious answer would be to pause and reduce the risk. But as far as I know, that isn't the scenario we are facing. To the contrary, we are in a situation where days matter and we have to decide what level of risk we are willing to tolerate in the very immediate term in order to get the benefits of the vaccine. And that is very close to same calculus you have to make when you decide whether to incur the risk associated with traveling to the vaccination center.
