How can we so far into this and major news sources still completely fail to understand the math behind vaccines. This is from CNN:
Quote:
In addition, real world studies of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines show they are only 90% protective against the coronavirus, not 95% as reported in clinical trials. Translated into reality, that means for every million fully vaccinated people who fly, some 100,000 could still become infected.
90% effectiveness does not in any way, shape or form mean that for every million people who do anything, 100,000 of them will be infected. If 10% of people who took a flight were going to get infected pre-vaccine (which is insane and
way too high), it would mean that pre-vaccine 100,000 of them would have gotten infected and now only 10,000 of them would.
Also, the 90% effectiveness using real world data is probably wrong too, but that doesn't irk me nearly as much as totally misunderstanding the basic math of vaccine effectiveness numbers.
