A few years ago at work [in US#1], I volunteered to monitor that everyone exited the floor in case of a fire emergency. Twice a year we would send out emails for a scheduled drill, the alarm would go off, and I'd make sure people in my section of the floor got up and walked to the exit.

Then one day the alarm went off. I'm walking around telling people to go to the exit, they're like "we're on the phone in a meeting, and there was no scheduled fire drill, gtfo". One of them was my manager.

I unvolunteered that day. Save yourselves.

for $10 a pop I can get a lab to load up a shipping container of them and it'll be at your door in a week

same stuff used in hospitals, at the airports for arrivals etc with full certification

the testkit shortage is 100% policy driven as government hands out exclusive licenses who can then charge a fortune for the exact same thing someone without a license should be able to import for $10
I hope you find a way!

I’ve never felt more addicted to my phone as I have the last week or so. Been almost obsessively refreshing twitter, Reddit, etc. It feels really unhealthy.

It's from the dataisbeautiful subreddit. I first saw it maybe 4-5 days ago and it's continued to track. I think they're getting the raw data from worldofmeters or something similar. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ Has the same 21,157 for Italy yesterday for example.

More Italians dates;

Mar 2 closed schools
Mar 7 quarantined Lombardy region
Mar 8 quarantined northern regions
Mar 9 quarantined entire country
Mar 11 only retail businesses still open is pharmacies and supermarkets

My gf is an ICU nurse at Mayo and I’m shocked that they’re not being more urgent about this.

New coronavirus may spread as an airborne aerosol, like SARS

"The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 can survive in the air for several hours in fine particles known as aerosols, according to preliminary research.

The coronavirus, which causes the respiratory infection COVID-19, can be detected up to 3 hours after aerosolization and can infect cells throughout that time period, the study authors found. However, the study, first posted March 10 on the preprint database medRxiv, is still preliminary, because it has not undergone extensive peer-review. The authors did receive comments from one prospective scientific journal, and posted an updated version of the study on March 13 reflecting the revisions."

"More important, even if aerosol transmission can occur, it's unlikely to be the primary force driving the current pandemic, Morris added."

"The current scientific consensus is that most transmission via respiratory secretions happens in the form of large respiratory droplets ... rather than small aerosols," he said. "Droplets, fortunately, are heavy enough that they don't travel very far" and instead fall from the air after traveling only a few feet. "

GF's coworker is in ICU for CV-19 since at least yesterday. He's somewhere in NY Suburbs. <40, but had cancer surgery a couple of years ago (still years ago tho)

I heard people were also commuting in from New Rochelle after the quarantine last week. (gotta keep that PTO day for a travel vacation, you know)

I live in a +17 Trump county ('16 prez election) and just had my haircut. I'm the only customer there. Two late 50s/early 60s woman stylists there. We get to talking about C-19 ... I say this time next week about 100 or so Americans will be dying per day. They both do a double take and look at me incredulously.

We have to remember that the vast vast majority of Americans aren't following C-19 like the 2+2 crowd. They are low information voters and/or Fox News viewers. They believe the Rs' position that this is just like the flu and things will blow over and be back to normal in a few weeks.

How long can Covid-19 live on surfaces...

But how long can the new coronavirus linger on surfaces, anyway? The short answer is, we don't know. A new analysis found that the virus can remain viable in the air for up to 3 hours, on copper for up to 4 hours, on cardboard up to 24 hours and on plastic and stainless steel up to 2 to 3 days. However, this study, which was published in the preprint database medRxiv on Wednesday (March 11), has not yet yet been peer-reviewed.

Pretty sure I'm lowballing here, but seeing recent developments I would guess 100 000 cases in the US alone within a month.

Oh and did you guys see this from the orange monkey? Instead of preparation and prevention, let's pray.

I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around what the end result is going to be. I’m all in on social distancing to flatten the curve, it’s about all we can at this point. But then what? People have to go back to work, it seems like a vax is still months out so quarantining until then will break all but the wealthiest, and won’t the vax simply minimize your chance of getting it? I’ve had the flu vax for the last couple of years and got the flu this year for the first time in ~30 years. I will continue to get the flu vax in the future, but am well aware that I’m still at risk. A COVID-19 vax would be the same, right?

If it is, then what? Currently there’s no pharmaceutical way to treat ARDS, and that’s how this thing kills. Someone help me out here, I’m not seeing much to be optimistic about.

There are many many many different strains of the flu, and the flu shot/vax doesn't cover them all. There is only 1 strain of CV19.

There is still no vaccine for HIV and several other major viral diseases despite spending hundreds of billions and after several decades of trying. There is no guarantee they'll ever have one for Covid-19. I'm hopeful they'll have one in a couple years but it'd take a miracle to get one out to the public in less than 18 months.

There isn't a vaccine for SARS. One problem they ran across was when they tested rats with the vaccine and then gave them SARS to see what happened the vaccine triggered the rat immune systems to go into overdrive and it killed the rats. That is why you can't rush human vaccines. It seems weird but a partially effective vaccine can result in a far worse result than having no immunity at all.

Best case scenario is that the virus dies out. There are two ways this can happen:

1: the virus becomes too aggressive, putting people in hospital and ICUs and infects people who are asymptomatic. Like other similar pandemics it can disappear as quickly as it came.

2: Quaranteen works, and the virus dies out without any new hosts. As seen from how the world handles it currently, this is incredibly unlikely.

Regarding vaccines, forget that. Researchers have been working on a vaccine targeting Corona viruses for 30+ years, unsuccessfully. Now the entire world is working to produce a vaccine for this single strain, but even if it would work it would take years.

We dont just have to worry about medial outcomes.

I cant see anyway this does not train wreck the economy.

Corporate debt and leveraging is high, so yea credit crunch from derivatives from that debt failing means we get the double whammy of a financial system shitting a brick and real world economy of actual stuff imploding.

Great Depression territory not that unlikely imo.
