worldometers says ~59 million people died this year. usa is 4% of the population, so that would be about 2.4 million dead americans this year. idk how many died in previous years. but either way 350k(probably low) is a pretty big chunk of 2.4mm

At this rate and at the current rate of vaccinations (about 200,000 per day so far), we're going to see another 350,000 before we're done.

Well the good news is 200k people a day (actually probably 3-5x that) are basically vaccinating themselves for a year at least by getting covid.

I think they're pretty confident it's minimum one year
Given the millions of cases worldwide and the handful of confirmed reinfections.

Sadly, I’m done taking the under on lines you set.

Based on similar viruses - it could be largely effective immunity up to two years, then still result in a much less intense infection for decades.

All this is assuming you got reasonably sick enough the first time to create B-cells that will remember the virus the second time. If you just tested positive but with mild or no symptoms then all bets are off.

My wife's best friend (a doctor), and my sister-in-law, both believe I had Covid in October. I don't believe them. I'm still wearing my mask.

Go give blood at The Red Cross if you want to know.

Pretty quick recovery today though. Some lingering chest discomfort, either lungs or cardiovascular, but otherwise I feel much better. Hoping there's no relapse tomorrow, I don't think there will be.
I wish you a full and speedy recovery. Thank you for the details.

If all the parties I heard about tonight are any indication, 2021 isn't really going to be that much different.

As I understand it, and IANAD, the new COVID variant is not itself more deadly but spreads faster, so my best guess is there will be many more infections. "At this rate" has left the building.

WTF

Some healthcare workers refuse to take COVID-19 vaccine, even with priority access - LA Times

Quote:
Roughly 20% to 40% of L.A. County’s frontline workers who were offered the vaccine did the same, according to county public health officials.
Quote:
So many frontline workers in Riverside County have refused the vaccine — an estimated 50% — that hospital and public officials met to strategize how best to distribute the unused doses, Public Health Director Kim Saruwatari said.
I just saw on the local news that for Orange county, frontline participation levels are around 60%.

smh. We're screwed.

I guess the good news is that the general population may be able to get in line to get vaccinated earlier than initially planned. (?)

Seriously you only did grocery runs and no one else in your household has interactions with anyone else?

I lost my dad to Covid a few weeks ago and trying to lock down Mom as much as possible but she's still hitting the store once a week or so with an N95.

You're in the LA area?

You can also spring for an antibody test, I know Quest labs here in NY/NJ sells them for $119 direct to consumers, no prescription needed. Kinda pricey but could be worth it to know for sure if you had it I guess.

Why would on earth would the govt want to shut down the economy? I'm guessing you think because of some nonsensical lizard people qanon spirit cooking BS?

Also the vaccine is here and it works. You're talking like it's years away. Just because you don't believe in basic science, fortunately most of us aren't as stupid and will wait out the next few months until we can get vaccinated.

I live by myself in L.A. yes. I'm probably more self-isolated than anyone on this forum this year, but I still have to buy groceries. I would always go at 10-10:30 on a weeknight before 11 p.m. close, usually not too busy and of course Covid numbers here in L.A. were a lot lower until now. But early last week I arrived at the grocery store at 10:30 and the security guard locked the door and said they were closing early, without explanation. I should have just returned home but like a degen I gambled on another store and it was like a Costco or Walmart in there. No idea when I started having symptoms but I've been alone the entire time.
Thanks for the info.
Mom is also in LA county. I know you've taken everything very seriously so it's even more scary to hear you've caught it especially given your living situation.

Continue to keep getting plenty of rest because as you know symptoms can come back hard but sounds like you're over the hump.

It will literally go away if people get vaccinated. If they don't, it won't.
