That's good. Hopefully the onset of liquefying is quick. It will be a lot better to have people die in place before they can go around and spread it to a hundred other people first. Then this thing can finally be contained and burn itself out.

We're up to 10 countries with 0.1% of their population dead from COVID. Nine are European countries (#6 Peru). It looks like the UK (994) will hold off the USA (984) to be the 11th. Not impossible that Bulgaria (977) or Czechia (971) could get there before us too. France and Germany also skyrocketing up the power rankings.

Six months ago South America was getting destroyed and nobody seemed to notice. Now it's the Balkans (4 Slovenia, 5 Bosnia, 7 North Macedonia, 10 Montenegro, 13 Bulgaria)

Yup a lot of us here in the South of England, including myself, have been put in a new higher tier lock down, Tier 4. Basically cancelling Xmas.

Of course, as usual, our government didn't really think this through. As soon as they announced it there is was mass exodus out of London (where I'd guess these new strain is at it's worse) of people wanting to get away before the lock down came into force at midnight, thus spreading the much more contagious, and dangerous variant all over the country! Sharing is caring

Also I believe more of the cases are asymptomatic, so it will be harder to quarantine people, and the cases that have symptoms are bad, and leading to a lot more hospitalisations.

Ooft, didn't realise Sweden was going quite so badly. I'm sure the advocates of the Sweden approach will be making full throated apologies any day now.

Of late, these champions have fallen silent. It’s not hard to explain why. Recent days have seen Sweden’s Nordic neighbours Finland and Norway offering emergency medical assistance as Stockholm’s hospitals have been overwhelmed, infections and deaths have spiked dramatically upward, and the King of Sweden has made an unprecedented criticism of the government’s bungled strategy.

We had the same thing happen here back in the spring. Minnesota shutdown all the restaurants and bars so people made the drive over the border to Iowa and Wisconsin. My side chick's parents were driving 90 minutes to go to a steakhouse twice per week.

My cousin's kid caught COVID during her third year of medical school doing a rotation at the nearby hospital. She was a perfectly healthy and brilliant young lady and now she has cardiomyopathy and scans show scar tissue on her atrium. No one knows how many of her symptoms are permanent, but they seem convinced that at least some of them are. To make things just a little more sucky, our Uncle died from viral cardiomyopathy a decade ago, so my cousin and I are both very paranoid about the long term consequences of the condition. It has definitely dramatically increased my inclination to punch people spouting bullshit about herd immunity and how the disease is a big nothing.

Why America is now a shithole, part 172:

Was having this 'discussion' with some moran friends last weekend. My input was something like "We've been at this for 9 months now, but yes please tell me more about testing. We should all have home testing by this point you ****ing TW@T."

They aren't saying that, no. The new strain does not appear to make people any iller. And it may not in fact transmit faster -- the WHO says there's no evidence of that. But it may cause more asymptomatic cases (so you don't know who to avoid) and it has taken off in the most densely populated part of the UK. (One UK citizen in seven is a Londoner, and the surrounding counties are also densely populated.) The new strain is not unique to the UK and has probably been reported here because the UK is a world leader in genome-sequencing, which many countries can't actually do.

The King of Sweden, in his end-of-year address, says their approach has failed dangerously, and the prime minister agrees with him.

This Twitter thread has a pretty good breakdown of what we do and don't know about the new mutations. From a US-based standpoint, one of the disturbing things that stands out from that thread is that the UK has submitted 3,774 viral genomes to the global database while the US has submitted 37. We have no idea whatsoever if that particular variant is circulating here or not.

Its been 10 months and the US still does not have in-home tests, widely available rapid testing, contact tracing, genomic sequencing, widespread N95 mask availability or even a clearly defined and explained vaccination plan. It is an absolute disgrace.

In MN you can get an in-home test sent via UPS, covered by your insurance or the state.
