Christie apparently has asthma as well so that makes his situation even worse.

I'm sure if you think about that statement for 1/2 minute the problem will be readily apparent.

It's not ideal but if I recall asthma isn't in the top 5 serious risk factors for Covid-19. Diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are the big three and I think high blood pressure is the most dangerous?

Maybe medical treatments to mitigate the problems high blood pressure causes have lessened the seriousness of that risk factor idk.

CDC's list of exacerbating conditions

That confirms what I had seen before which was a report on Italy from April or early May. Asthma and other respiratory illnesses (excepting COPD which is truly awful) aren't nearly as bad as people would expect from a virus that causes pneumonia in serious cases.

Asthma is only listed as "might be at increased risk" and it's an alphabetical list so the first position is likely not it's actual place in the "might be" risk rankings. It couldn't make the list of nine (obesity is listed twice) "are at increased risk" conditions.

I would certainly be concerned about it but Christie definitely has a couple or more conditions that are far bigger problems.

I notice high blood pressure was on the CDC "might be at risk" list which is pretty ridiculous. The Italian study (which I can't find and only saw once months ago) had it solidly as the #1 most frequent risk factor in fatal cases. People with high blood pressure had significantly worse results than patients who were similar except not having high blood pressure.

https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/2020...-covid-19-care

From the article

Quote:
Among more than 11,000 people across 22 studies from eight countries, 42% of COVID-19 patients had high blood pressure, the researchers found. The next most common chronic illness was diabetes, which affected 23% of the patients.

High blood pressure on its own was associated with a higher likelihood of death, the combined results showed.
All I can figure is the CDC put high blood pressure on the "might be a risk" list because no one has quite figured out why it's a problem. It's definitely a severe risk factor though. No might be about it.

Clearly hinges on whether we're defining "high blood pressure" consistently, but this study says 46% of american adults have it: https://www.uab.edu/news/health/item...blood-pressure

So if 42% of covid patients have it, that doesn't really indicate to me that high blood pressure elevates your risk

Covid spread question/hypothetical, let's say on your way to a work meeting you are exposed in a way that you are 100% to develop a moderate case of covid. How much of a risk is it for people at that meeting? Is it perhaps close to none because of how recent the exposure is?

Similarly with a yoga class example where instructor has it and everyone gets it, is it because of the carrier and prolonged exposure or is there a chain effect thing going on?

From everything I've heard it's a minimum of 2 days after exposure before you're contagious.

Yeah, I was looking into it lately and this is what everything I read said. My sister was in town for a funeral and came to visit my grandmother after attending the ****ing Cowboy game so I was trying to figure out how long before they could give it to us. Two days after exposure before you're contagious and likely another 2 days after that before you show symptoms.

1887 cases in Slovakia (pop 5.5 million) yesterday. To put that into perspective the entire first wave was 1500 cases.

Currently at 18797 cases, 61 deaths (of which 28 were in the first wave).

People's attitude second time around it basically that they're going to wear masks but they're not going to change what they are doing otherwise.

Cech republic is also exploding.

Slovakia put in its highest DPM day on oct 3rd at 1.1DPM (per day) previous record was April 16th at 0.73.

CR much worse though,

previous record was 1.68 (April 15th) Oct 9 put in a massive (for them) 3.74.

Yes - 1.1 DPM is 6 people. Good site btw - for a small country like Slovakia the weekly averaged numbers are probably more useful - the 7 day avg recently peaked at 0.34 DPM (per day) which also breaks the spring record - good that the site lets you choose how to display the data.

Case fatality rate seems lower this time around (even accounting for the fact that a lot of the cases are recent) - perhaps a lot of cases were missed first time around and now testing is better.

Johnson & Johnson has paused all COVID-19 vaccine trials after a participant developed what the company described as an “unexplained illness” during a trial. The pharmaceutical giant had recently begun Phase 3 trials for its vaccine. This comes a month after AstraZeneca paused vaccine trials after two participants developed serious neurological illnesses. AstraZeneca has resumed trials overseas but not in the United States.

In other medical news, The Lancet medical journal has revealed a 25-year-old Nevada man became infected with COVID-19 twice earlier this year, with the second infection more severe than the first.

I'm sure it's different strains. The second infection being more serious is very concerning though. The previous cases I'd heard about were all less serious the second time around.
