Unbelievable!

The sender of that should be fired, but will probably be promoted at the earliest opportunity.

Not surprising. I mean there are still plenty on this forum even today that keep saying/believing this very thing. And keep pointing to other flus that we've had in the past as examples of why we shouldn't be worried.

Just awesome.

The CDC estimates there were over 60 million cases of H1N1 of which over 12,000 people died in the US. My opinion is that if COVID-19 hits these numbers people will be hiding in bomb shelters (I may be exaggerating a little). What do you guys think will be the reaction if the current pandemic hits the US this hard (mass hysteria, no big deal something in between)? I know some if you think we will blow past these numbers where some think we won't but let's just say we start approaching these numbers.

Also, if we had social media in 2009 as we do now, would we have taken the same measures then as we are now? I know there were measures put in place in 2009 but my normal day to day living was unaffected as was my work environment (I worked in a large manufacturing facility).
The funny thing is that if we don't reach those numbers because of the widespread awareness and preventive measures that take place due to all of this overreacting;

All the people that had no part in making this positive outcome occur will just be like, "I told you so." and continue to believe their fantasy that there was nothing to be worried about.

And we'll continue to be just as ill-prepared for future events like we have thus far.

But yeah we're still in the very early stages. We'll see. I hope I don't get to say I told you say. I'd rather live to hear it said to me.

Parents flew (from the UK) to Norway on Tuesday and got on a cruise ship.

I wrote then: "So you're not worried about outbreaks of coronavirus then?"
Reply this morning: "Que sera sera. "
Reply this evening: "Norway has closed all its ports to foreigners. We're stuck on the boat!"

The Prime Minister of the UK:

Quote:
“It is going to spread further and I must level with you, I must level with the British public: many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time.”
The policy response of the UK:

Ask people who feel ill to voluntarily self isolate, you will receive 94£ a week sick pay if eligible.

Yea can see a big compliance rate on that one...not!

Advise that olds dont go on cruises.

I am particularly bitter about this as my son is in a vulnerable group. He has Cystic Fibrosis.

I’ve been sick as a dog the last couple days. Spiked a 104 degree temp last night. Have all the signs of this thing, but haven’t travelled outside the US in a long time. Called my doctor who said they didn’t want to see me and to call the health department for a test. Called the health department and they said they weren’t administering tests and gave me a hotline to call. Called the hotline and they said if I haven’t been out of the country or had direct contact with someone known to have COVID-19, they wouldn’t test me and that I just needed to stay home and rest until I haven’t had a fever for 24 hours. Hard to know what I have or how to treat it given all of that.
From Chiefsplanet. This is so infuriating.

Meanwhile the Mayo Clinic is so frustrated with the lol CDC that it developed it's own test that you can get via drive thru:

Quote:
Lawmakers in Congress are expressing outrage and confusion as to why the United States is not testing individuals for the COVID-19 coronavirus at as fast a pace as other countries, following closed-door briefings with administration officials who failed to explain the discrepancy.

Several members emerged from an all-members House briefing Thursday morning saying they were told the government is working around the clock to make tests, but the US system is trying to catch up to other countries like South Korea.

Members were exasperated with what they said was a lack of clarity in the officials' answers, as lawmakers struggle to understand how the US has been so far outpaced by other countries grappling with the pandemic.

As he left Thursday's briefing, GOP Rep. Mark Walker of North Carolina said there is "a growing frustration among members as a whole to get more definitive answers" from the administration about testing capabilities.

He said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "struggled to give a really strong answer" on why the United States hasn't been able to duplicate testing that is being used in places such as South Korea.

This will go down as one of the saddest days in World history. No March Madness, no MLB, no hockey puck, no Disneyland, no audiences for late night TV, and the list goes on.

Is the WSOP cancelled yet or are they holding on hoping to hit the one-outer by using their 'one time!'?

I don't think so. Some people will bareback and make jokes about getting AIDS. There has been no lack of public awareness of that disease.

People respond to things in different ways, and in his case, he responds to things as a joke. When 9/11 happened, people waited exactly 5 minutes to start telling jokes about falling towers.

The dude is 23 years old, and a bunch of 23 year olds are going to deal with life with jokes. Is it smart? Well, no, but he ain't 50.

Trump recently did an address on the coronovirus. This is from the BBC:

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us...office-address

-- 30 Travel ban from European mainland. UK not included.

-- Setting up loans for small businesses

-- encourage congress to pass tax relief

-- advise nursing homes to suspect unnecessary visits

-- older people shouldn't go out to crowded areas

-- a call for unity

***

I looked up some of the US media articles and there is a whole lot of 2000 word screeds with muddied up and confusing responses. One article claims there will be a 14 day quarantine on US citizens re-entering the country, which I suppose it true.

They call him out for not restricting goods. Gee, I wonder why that would be a bad idea.

He’s getting called out because in his speech he said goods and cargo would be suspended.

But he said a lot of untrue things in that speech, just par for the course.

Thanks. Have not yet replied.

The main part of the cruise is about sailing up to the arctic circle, northern lights, fjords etc - i.e. done from the boat, so assuming no outbreak it's not a dead loss if they can't get off in a few of the small towns on the way up. Assuming they have some way to get back to the UK eventually. I'm kind of surprised the Norwegians aren't counting this as domestic transport as it's just going up their coast between their own ports.

Parents were bored at home anyway so I suppose they'll be fine with being stuck on the boat for a few extra days if it comes to that.

They have announced 110 positive test results in the state thus far. Given the strict testing criteria what percentages of overall test have come up positive? 25%? Assuming all test have been taken in the last week, which they haven't, we're looking at ~60 tests/day. So now they can do 240 tests/day. Great!
