She lost me at " Let’s conservatively assume", and viruses seem to be outwith her field.

I think you are misinterpreting us "but flu kills X times more every year" crowd.
We are talking about the "panic". If they don't panic about 61k a year deaths, then why are we panicking when it's at 19 in the USA?

That is pretty much all you can do. And of course stay tuned on this thread. And man, let's start taking this seriously! We can still joke about life.

You could be correct, but I can't see it.

Can people see why some of us criticize the "panic" ?

Because it is likely to be 100s of thousands of deaths, not 19

Because we can see where it is heading based on all the data available.

The American Hospital Association is predicting 480,000 dead in US this year from corona.

You aren’t so dense that “only” 19 actually should matter to your prediction of where this is going.

It typically takes 3-5 weeks to kill people and 20% of cases need oxygen for 3-6 weeks to have a shot at getting over it. It’s not hard to see where we are going based on how it has spread so far all over the world while we are doing the worst job of quarantining of basically any country.

How many need to die before you think we should worry? It’s at 3600 deaths now, but perhaps only American lives are real lives to you?

Its nothing to do with her field but a lack of understanding about exponential growth! Anybody who has studied any STEM subject will have seen the implications of this several weeks ago...

You don't panic about 61k deaths a year because proportionally that's a tiny amount: ~0.02% of the US population.

This on the other hand may infect up to 80% of the population; all within a 2-3 month window, with 20% of those infected requiring an extended hospital stay of around 1 month. If the healthcare system goes into total meltdown and half of those 20% end up dieing you are going to lose about 8% of the population!!!

This is exactly the kind of hyperbole I have been talking about. So much fake panic.
The US total is 19. UK is 2.
It hasn't spread all over the world.
The US isn't doing the worst job.
Wrong assumption that I am American/ American lives is all that matters.
I thought I was running bad today!

If you want a figure that I start panicking at, I'd say UK = 250 - 500 times the current total, depending on age of victim.
USA = at least 3500, or maybe about 100 a day, which I think is the same as road fatality rates. And no, I don't panic about road fatality rates.

It started in China. People who traveled from that area were quarantined. Yet it is still spreading. How are you so dense thinking that today right now is the extent of the spread and it is over and done? People who don’t have symptoms (you and I could be in this group) continue to spread it unknowingly. But nope, back your Trump fake news.

Why do you want to wait until there are 250 times the CONFIRMED cases and deaths before panicking? It is way too late at that point.

It’s in 99 countries; that is basically all over the world and it’s considering to spread; 99 won’t be the end of it.

And we are in early stages in US and UK with a disease that averages 4 weeks to death.

Get informed or live in your bubble. It’s not bad here or in UK today, but wait until April/May and the deaths start piling up.

And the US isn’t testing while people continue to go all over the place and people who have it and are told to self quarantine are going to parties and malls. So yeah, our response is horrible and we are doing almost nothing to stop the spread. Meanwhile Italy is locking down whole areas. Oh yeah, and we continue to take cruises and today there are 2 more cruise ships with corona off our coast.

Also, people in the thread aren’t “panicking”

There aren’t riots and most people still go to the store and work and live their lives.

But we are concerned because we see the writing on the wall and are worried for our older loved ones.

Tubi, please stop comparing death rate ofevents such as pandemics to events such as road accidents.

If one million people died in the UK in a year, and I asked you to guess the cause between pandemic and road accident, you would never pick road accident.

Your neighbor getting in to a road accident does not increase your risk of dying in a road accident.

Also, I notice you tend to express your numbers linearly (100 per day, 100k per month). That is not how this thing works. Look up how many Italian coronavirus deaths there were 2 weeks ago.

99 countries isn't all over the world.

"Get informed" is very hypocritcal coming from you.

"It's not bad here" is basically confirming everything I've said, and contradicting everything you've said.

I can see some of you are getting triggered by those of us who are not panicking yet, and desperately throwing straw men at us.
You are even using "children have had their schools closed" to attack another poster, which had nothing whatsoever to do with what he said.
So peace out.

The children part is to show how much it’s affecting people over the world and 400M children out of school isn’t the fault of “the liberal media”

And no, it’s not bad TODAY (nice job leaving the most important word out of the quote) but it will be as the exponential growth continues unchecked.

And 99/195 countries already is widespread all over the world; I never said it was in every single little country. I’m sure Vanuatu will be spared if they don’t have many travelers there.

You can play semantics and put your head in the sand all you want.

Again, nothing in my life has changed as of today; but that doesn’t mean I’m not worried about the entire world over the next 6 months even if I’m personally low risk.

If it doubles every 6 days, as evidence suggests, then you can do the math for where we will be in early May

When we know that is happening and we aren’t able to stop that happening, it doesn’t take Nostradamus to see where we are headed.

If I had $1M to my name but couldn’t get more and I was spending $300k/month you’d prolly tell me I should ease up on my spending and I could laugh at you and say “I’m a millionaire today, stop panicking” but everyone with any sense would see that I’ll be broke in less than 4 months if nothing changes.

I'll allow it but the conclusion should be that the automobile is the greatest scourge of the 20th-21st century and we need to do something to mitigate all the deaths it causes, not that we shouldn't be concerned about coronavirus.

I would think that pure extrapolation from early data would massively inflate predictions (nless the virus mutates).

I say that because if the deaths reach even a few thousand, things will start happening that would have been much less widespread thirty years ago.

The retired will virtually never go out and instead let Amazon deliver

Computers will allow a good many of non retired to also stay home and work from there.

Those who must leave the house will be wearing high tech protective gear that, unlike masks, will actually work.

Plus of course the number of 150+ IQs presently working on a vaccine (with knowledge of Genetics only recently available) is probably far greater than anytime in the past so we might get one sooner than most think.
