Princess cruise lines in SF have been quarantined:

California is also keeping Grand Princess passengers on the current San Francisco-Hawaii trip in the Pacific Ocean indefinitely until state and federal officials can assess how many passengers and crew have coronavirus or have been exposed.

As the number of infected people goes up, the death rate will go down. Would you like to bet on the death rate of the corona virus in 6 months? I will take under whatever it is right now.

The Tokyo marathon was restricted to just the elite field, Rome marathon was cancelled, Paris marathon postponed, and the LA marathon..... is still on for this weekend.

I'm not sure how stupid this is, but it doesn't seem smart.

So if in 6 months a million people are infected in the US and the death rate is .8% - that's a positive outcome?

I trust the WHO massively more than the CDC, which is clearly being muzzled and hamstrung by this administration.

These numbera definitely remind me of the famous % of persons. USA #1 might even be a more ba made up stay tho.

You said it's "not a big deal." That doesn't square with what doctors, the CDC, the WHO, or anyone else is saying.

Positive outcome? I think coming up with a vaccine that will be effective against this is the only positive outcome. I don't think buying up every drop of hand sanitizer in the world will save you from getting the virus and I agree with you about WHO. You can add it to my list of who I will listen to. You say this is a big deal. OK, you are correct, it is a big deal, but the mass hysteria the media is causing is quite the overreaction and that is going to have a much worse effect on us in the long run than the actual virus.

When I said it isn't that big of a deal, I was only referring to what the media is making it out to be. To clarify, the new deadly virus is a big deal. It's just not going to be the end of civilization like the media has made many believe.

I heard on the radio WHO has lowered the death estimate from the virus: 1.4 percent. It was a bit over 2 percent earlier. Makes me feel I might, just might go through this. Every tenth of percent it's going down should be celebrated with a massive (lone) party.

Even so I have estimated I have about a one percent chance I will not be around in one year from this, as being a male (maybe a bit higher death rate) and not being young. So be it. This is my way of staying calm. Bring it on! But let's hope the death rate comes down further, think relatives, friends, mankind.

I don't think any of the media are characterizing this as the end of civilization. It could however eventually kill someone you know (for most people) and bring a huge portion of the economy to a grinding halt.

There's also the % of serious cases that wind up with permanent lung damage, immunosuppression damage, or neurological damage.

Eighteen months to a vaccine seems long to me. From what I understand, it is not difficult to come up with a vaccine that is efficacious; the holdup is clinical testing designed to show whether it might be harmful. At what case death rate does that regulation no longer make any sense?

Maybe we could add another percent there? Holy ****. Then the only hope is the virus will not hit all exposed. Then death+disability could still be in the one percent area.

Let's enjoy life (while we can)

.
Can you link to any clips, stories, etc., that say this is the end of civilization? I think it's been pretty measured so far. CNN who I'm not a giant fan of and you disparaged but they had a town hall last night and it seemed pretty fair and straightforward, and non-panic-inducing.

I think the takeaways people should have right now are:

1) Protect yourself and others by behaving sanitarily. Don't cough in your hands, wash your hands frequently, don't touch your face, etc.

2) Prepare for possible short-term supply and "lifestyle" disruptions. People need to be prepared for some inconvenience. The example of the person in NH who was confirmed and ordered to quarantine, who broke quarantine to go to a damn party. That mindset needs to stop. Don't hoard, but have a 2-4 week supply of necessities in case you need to stay home.

I don't think those are panic-inducing, but people acting like OMG it's less than the flu are being very very reckless. A slow spread will save a ton of lives, even if the exact same number of people are ultimately infected, due to the availability of medical care, hospital beds, etc.

I think the right-wing media that he likely ingests is probably the one pushing the “media is overly freaking out” narrative

Dr Drew for one is pushing that narrative, but actually looking at what the news is saying (or the townhall that cnn did) would show you that they aren’t overreacting.

The way things are going in the USA I halfway expect a worldwide travel ban before June against the USA because unless things change really fast we're going to be by far the biggest global hotspot of the virus.

Another stupid question. Even if the virus subsides in warm weather like the flu, how does that help the world if the virus is everywhere. Put another way, the Southern Hemisphere is a thing, right?
