I still can't decide whether this is a horrible precursor to the apocalypse or a giant overreaction. I have plans in the next month or so to visit New Orleans, Los Angeles and Seattle. Maybe Boston as well. All are only semi-mandatory, and I'm wondering if I should cancel.

The flight to Seattle should be cheap if you haven't booked yet. It might also be canceled by the airline at the rate things are going there.

I have a trip to Seattle at the end of the month. No plans to cancel.

All in all I think the scientists need to be more vigilant and prepared in the future. They could try to figure out what types of viruses could turn malice and develop some preliminary vaccines against them. Getting a vaccine in a year doesn't relieve me much.

But a lesson will be learned. Having exactly zero treatment in the year of 2020. It's like AIDS in the 1980s.

Then I will not have to be afraid of running out of toilet paper next time around.

Think of it as an unintended drill for a virus that will actually threaten human civilization.

On US side, I think we pretty conclusively showed the CDC, FDA, and state authorities need better protocols for rapid deployment of tests and development of contingency plans.

Globally, similar lessons. But in addition, I think this may be the first time in a long while people are going: "We still don't have effective anti-virals even for the frigging flu? Really?"

vaccines in advance to yet-unknown virus infections? That would be a neat trick indeed. Most viral infections have no vaccine even though their structures have been known for ages.

Also, the 1% death rate is the CFV (case fatality rate) not the IFR (infection fatality rate). The Harvard guy’s numbers are for total infections. Some percentage of them won’t go to doctors and don’t count against the CFR. So the dead would be less than you guys are calculating even in the worst case scenario.

More than so sir, I'm totally pissed.

And btw, if 2% of the sick are killed, it could be 1% of the total population, if the Harvard guy's upper limit hits. Let's dearly hope I'm wrong, would gladly throw my theories out.

My opinion is that the US does not seem to be doing much re:coronavirus. Contrast this with draconian quarantine measures in China and Italy. With the lack of testing there are likely thousands to tens of thousands of cases already, most with milder symptoms but spreading the disease. Given the lack of travel/social gathering restrictions currently in place, probably looking at a nationwide epidemic by April with hundreds of thousands of cases. If we assume a fairly conservative mortality rate of 1% we could be looking at very large numbers of deaths in the US and a complete shutdown of travel and large social gatherings.

Only real prep is to have some food and TP in the house in case I need to self-quarantine. Also Tylenol water etc.

Only other action I am taking besides frequent hand washing is to try really hard to stop touching my face. Which is a bad habit I have, so it's tough to stop. I have tied string around a finger on each hand as a reminder. Seems to help. But I still work in a public setting and come in contact with many people, so there is an element of luck involved obv.

not touching one's face is hard but not impossible. I put hand sanitizer in my car and use it when i get in the car from the office and when i get gas or go to the store. i've been concentrating on not touching my face and using knuckles to hit elevator buttons and the like.

it all makes me feel like a weirdo.

Almost assuredly somewhere in between.

I also have tried not to touch my face also before, because I have a tendency to get flues. And then I wash my hands when coming home and at work too. And normal measures to take care of myself at least a bit. That's it.

When it comes to the U.S. I think practically nothing will be done in the name of freedom. Maybe better so, not like China will not backdoor the epidemic again.

Already mutated? Probably getting the lesser would give some protection against the other? Looks this will be somewhere between a bit worse influenza and, how to put it, the end of the world as we used to know it.

Do the two variants fight it out if they run across each other on your face? I hope so.

Why not use your knuckles to touch your face and use your fingertips for stuff designed for them?

Bonus: Can't pick you nose with your knuckles
