I've definitely thought about bringing NV into the mix. I've thought maybe we could just link up with our neighbors to the north, and along with NY and other north east states, we could be like Canada's sideburns.

We have become far too large and diverse of a country for all 330 million of us to be governed by the same body.

Living in California, I would be ecstatic if we, Oregon, and Washington ended up doing our own thing. It wouldn't be without its challenges, but overall we'd majorly thrive. California on its own I think is like the 6th or 7th largest economy in the world.

Frankly my only concern would be that U.S. Classic would attack us for our resources.
What about the stay on daylight savings permanently thing?

Your major concern should be that US Classic will not supply your water anymore (IE - Colorado). GG California

Colorado can be part of New U.S. It'll be like the New U.S. Embassy when we go visit U.S. Classic. We can also annex the Chicagoland area and make that its own state in New U.S.

Not so sure you want anything to do with Chicago or Illinois. They are both bankrupt even before all of this. I see Illinois being carved up and going to other states leaving us with 49. That is if any other states want to take that burden. Chicago and Illinois are massive drains on the entire country now and with everything else going on the Federal government won't be able to bail them out. It's really gonna get ugly now and exodus Illinois will really speed up making places like Detroit look like the promised land.

Colorado isn't really a blue state tho, I don't see how a vote to go California would ever even get close to passing. There would be a mass exodus or armed riots from all the rural areas if that were the case

also, Isn't California financially pretty terrible, like they have a massive debt and shitty credit rating? I thought I remember reading about how they have the 6th largest economy in the world like you said, but that they are completely incapable of being self sufficient

Coastal California is also quite different from the central valley.

Alobar, to your point, it all depends on how you count it. If you include unfunded pension liabilities as well as state and local debt, California is somewhere around 1.5T, but that analysis was from 2019 and doesn't account for the recent market drop.

Here's something that may be an interesting exercise: What will change as we begin to open up shop again, whenever that is? I will list some of my thoughts, and you can offer your own thoughts on my initial topics and add any you may think of. I'm talking just USA for the sake of argument:

Restaurants:
-30-40%(non-FF/Corp) never open again/close again for good a few months after re-opening.
-rolling re-openings will facilitate above.
-will never fully go back to packed-house, elbow-to-elbow for years, if ever.
-millions of server jobs lost.

Movie Theaters:
-done. Will never recover.
-studios/distributors/etc will move to streaming even more.
-50% movie theaters close in 2 years.

Handshakes:
-done.

Concerts:
-just can't see elbow-to-elbow again if this becomes a perpetual elderly/sickly-killing machine.
-is social-distancing still active, and how long?

Sporting events:
-just can't see elbow-to-elbow again if this becomes a perpetual elderly/sickly-killing machine.
-is social-distancing still active, and how long?

Colleges Fall 2020:
-do they let students begin/go back to school en masse?

Office vs. Work-from-home:
-do 50% of jobs become WFH?
-how do offices function after a corona spike in Oct/Nov?

Economy:
-the sheer volume of unemployment with a lot of those jobs never coming back is going to be brutal.
-UBI hopefully becomes a real topic of discussion.

I have more, but will leave it at that for now.

i've always been a huge advocate of public transportation. but public transportation at rush hour in a big city... psh... people are packed on the trains like sardines. i know people aren't gonna wanna go back to that if this virus is here with us to stay. something will have to be done to spread out rush hour.

and i hope handshakes are done

My buddy sent this to me earlier. I’m assuming this is accurate because of the few people wearing masks. I’m not sure where he saw the photo

Whether there are ever again 10-handed tables, movie theaters, etc. depends on how all this ends. If there's a vaccine, or an effective treatment to prevent NCIP (novel coronavirus-induced pneumonia) from developing, then yes, maybe stuff will get "back to normal" in a reasonable time period.

If there are waves of infections with no treatment or vaccine and everybody has to socially isolate for an extended period, not so much.

I feel like this is a certainty. They've been struggling for a long time, there's simply no way they can make it back. I think the niche will open back up for "cool" theatres such as Alamo Drafthouse, that offer more of an experience.

I ****ing hope so. Never liked them to begin with, very Larry David about handshaking in general.

For real, the shift has happened. "Normal" won't be normal anymore. UBI is a must, equal healthcare for all is a must.

I hope that this will re-vitalize the push for upgraded networks and security. True Web 2.0 stuff. Internet should be a utility.

i honestly think that just about everything goes back to the same as it was before, anywhere between immediately to within 3 months of the "lock down" being lifted for all items listed.

including handshakes

especially if the "lock down" is successful

goes back to normal after a time if that time isnt too long. like within 2 more months.

most businesses that were viable before open again.

then it flares up real bad again next fall and all hell breaks out, but we are much more prepared for it and handle it fine.

Studio City is the ****ing bomb. A beautiful town with exploding culture and culinary options, places to hike, a suburby feel but without the sprawl, only 10 minutes from Hollywood but without the Hollywood feel.at all.

A 1,000 square foot 1 bedroom 1 bathroom house in Studio City goes for $1M. But tell me more about how no one wants to be there. LOLjfc

By the way, I don't live in Studio City. I just never bothered to update my location. I lived there from 2003-2009, then lived in Hollywood for 8 years, and have since been in our house in Sherman Oaks. So I'm not trying to be a Studio City homer at all.

Anyone who knows anything about Studio City knows that it's excellent.

A little defensive, are we? Take a pill. Studio City is nice enough -- I was just having fun. I know LA well, having lived in tujunga, granada hills, la crescenta, pasadena, palms, MDR, Hollywood, Venice, Brentwood, Hancock Park and Malibu in no particular order.
