I predict the US will learn nothing from India and then be crying 2 months from now oh how could this resurgence happen?!

It's more or less settled science about vaccines that they mostly prevent people from transmitting the disease, not just getting it. So even if you're an anti-vax dumbass, there's less ambient COVID to pick up when >50% of the population is vaxxed.

Furthermore--probably even more importantly-- though vaxes prevent infection at something <100%, they prevent serious illness and death at an extraordinary high rate.

Anything can happen, but another surge (like, 2k deaths/day again in the US) is simply nowhere near the base case at this point.

Things are not great in the rest of the world, but it appears he was incredibly wrong for this prediction.

I remember at the time thinking that his doom and gloom scenario seemed strange and that he was not factoring in the vaccine enough. Gottlieb, Fauci and other covid experts were taking a far more optimistic view. Is anyone making the argument that he wasn't very wrong?

I don't think it's quite hurricane level 5 but the UK variant definitely a major part of a massive surge here in Michigan, hospitals full again, much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Case counts starting to subside finally this week.

I agree it does appear he was generally wrong for most of the US. I hope that remains the case.

this virus has been bad. worse in some places than others depending on how it was handled.
but the chance that it mutates into something that can ruin the whole world, it should have certainly be handled more strongly and once the vaccines became wildly available to everyone forced to require to leave your home.
maybe not too late to do that.
you have the right to not take the vaccine but not the right to spread the virus.

Agreed that masks should have been mandatory, as well as indoor events and large gatherings shut down. If a large % of people weren't total morons who deny science b/c of their religion/politics, then we would have had much less severe outcomes.

Still though, it was always gonna be a tricky issue b/c most countries don't have the luxury to allow all of their population to stay indoors for 2 months. In some areas of Mexico, they realized how severe the problem was, and still people were crammed into public transport b/c many people live in the cheaper outskirts and then take p.t. into the city in order to make money as they live day to day for the most part. I guess you would have needed the gov't. to step in and take care of the people, but even the USA couldn't pull it off, so I doubt other countries with a fraction of the resources would have been able to either.

it was never said the whole population had to stay indoors for two months or at all. that was what the anti makers said the govts. were trying to do.

for anything you can always find situations that wont work well and then say that means that whole scenario wont work at all.

just like right now since india hasnt tried to control it and there has been a bad variant there. weeks ago the u.s. should have banned any entry from that country or someone that visited it in the previous month. no one is going to starve because of that and it has the potential to actually saves thousands or millions if the variant turned deadly. but likely too late as its been found in the u.s.

the countries that took similar measures in the beginning had little spread and loss of life and no wide spread famine in their country.

problem is we have 7 billion people crowded onto a planet only 24,000 around at its widest point with almost all if it uninhabitable. and 75% or more of them are not capable of basic sound reasoning.
