Or whatever you call it? It’s what you just called it, lol.

Anyway, I just tested negative for COVID but have some viral throat thing instead. Two days for results (my weekend, yay). Still feels like a loss, since I had to go to the doctor for this throat thing anyway. On the upside, I’m genuinely surprised at how clinics/hospitals seem to have this **** down. In many ways, my appointment for the throat culture was much simpler and quicker than any other appointment I’ve ever had. I only saw 3 med staff (two nurses and the doctor), and no other patients. Everything is walled off into cubicles and clear plastic aisles.

Peru all the way up to #4 in the deaths/million power rankings. Amazing charge. Brazil has been challenging USA for #10 but USA refuses to give. I feel like Mexico is a potential dark horse champion, currently at #13.

It's going to be horrendous here. ~50% death rate for hospitalized covid-patients here in Baja California so far.

Bars and casinos are open, indoor dining is open, beaches/hiking trails are closed.

Surfers are being pulled out of the water and arrested but you can go to a casino and gamble without a mask.

They are sanitizing the sidewalks and public areas with chemical trucks and sprayers but not requiring people to wear masks...

it's a mess.

Did I read somewhere that Mexico recently posted a 62% test positivity rate? That's not good!

Wouldn't be surprised. Technically here in Baja California we've only had ~14k positive tests. But we've had at least 3k deaths out of 14k cases so the vast majority of cases are never being counted.

If I wanted to get tested here in Mexico I would have no idea how to do so besides showing up at the hospital. Not even sure they have tests there but there's no other information

That sucks man. Stay safe out there.

To save others from looking it up: I assume tgiggity is talking about Baja California Norte which has a population of ~3.3M

Thanks, haven't gone out since march. Yes, BC norte. And yeah we're lucky that there are only 4 population centers (rosarito, tijuana, ensenada and mexicali) and overall low population so the raw numbers of cases/deaths won't look too crazy

Tulane is testing every single returning student, faculty and staff. In the last two weeks. they've run about 8,000 years and found 33 positives, who are now quarantined/isolated and contact traced. There are strict mask/group/distancing requirements that result in expulsion if not followed -- for example, no visitors from outside the building are permitted in any dormitory, and masks must be worn 100 per cent of the time if a student is outside their own room. Students must symptom check every day and self-report. All that makes me somewhat more optimistic that the school will run reasonably well this semester, but we will see.

Daughter reports that she can't figure out which other students are attractive because everyone is wearing a mask. Amusing.

So are colleges just preaching abstinence again or what? RAs still handing out free condoms?

Any idea what it's like further down the peninsula? Plenty of expats live right on the beach - so it's hard to see how you could shut that down. I love the area around Mulege - Bahia Concepcion. I wonder how they're doing now.

I'm down in Ensenada and the main beaches are heavily patrolled but the beaches closer to la Bufadora where a large # of expats live and further south out of town are likely not patrolled - though I haven't checked yet because up until a week or so ago the military had checkpoints set up at the northern/southern entrances to the city turning away anybody who didn't have paperwork proving residency in Ensenada

No idea about Baja Sur

On Wednesday, President Trump publicly introduced the new head of the White House coronavirus task force: Dr. Scott Atlas, a radiologist with no expertise in infectious diseases. Dr. Atlas has promoted school reopenings and previously suggested curtailing public health measures to allow the U.S. to reach coronavirus “herd immunity.”

That is really encouraging and probably about the best you could hope for.

LOL'd at the last part. The selection parameters they end up relying on might be better in the long run.

Hopefully we will have another pandemic in 12 years when my oldest daughter is off to college.

lol, hence my abstinence remark. College kids are gonna keep on ****ing, regardless of the mask situation. Your daughter might just end up ****ing less attractive dudes.

Well if you're gonna do it, doggy style in a running shower seems safest.

Daughter reports that three students were expelled today for not following covid rules, including one incoming freshman. That's got to have been one seriously unhappy phone call. But I told daughter to follow the damn rules.

A former colleague liked to quip that he had a face made for radio.
