The Malaysian Ministry of Defence will institute a mandatory mask requirement effective August 1, 2020 in crowded areas and on public transportation. Failure to comply may result in a RM 1,000 (USD $235) fine or jail time. Median income here is about $1300/month, so that's like a relative fine of $900USD for USA#1ers.
They made this decision after the new daily case rate, which had been averaging in the single digits for a month or so (including 3 weeks without a single death), rose to double digits (currently around 14-18 new daily cases on average) about two weeks ago. Malaysia has about 10% the population of USA#1, so it would be as if USA#1 went from say 50-70 new cases per day to 140-180 new cases per day. ofc lolUSA#1 is at like 70,000 new cases per day while Malaysia hasn't even hit 10k cases in total so loooooool
They've been steadily relaxing the lockdown here over the last few months but have now said that if daily new cases start averaging >100, we'll be back to full lockdown immediately. Masks are already required to enter businesses & QR-code scanned contact tracing required in anything other than the smallest of businesses.
When I describe the USA#1 #s to Malaysians, they generally don't believe me and/or think I'm clearly mistaken. The idea that people would refuse to wear masks, or that 1000 deaths/day (Malaysia has had 124 deaths
in total during the entire pandemic, with 10% the population of USA#1) is even possible doesn't really seem real to them.
