Cheap red wine (n):

1) A beverage made from fermented grapes that is of a color at the end of the human visual spectrum next to orange and opposite violet except for when not presented with a strong backlight in which case it is pretty much violet, that has a price at least 20% lower than the median price per unit in the local grocery store of such beverages made from fermented grapes that is of a color at the end of the spectrum next to orange and opposite violet except for the ****ing condition where it looks like violet that was mentioned earlier in this definition.

2) An alcoholic beverage that states both "grape flavored" and "wine" on its label. For instance, Mad Dog 20/20

3) The wine your friend brings over when you say "bring over some cheap red" and he doesn't show up with Red Skelton (anachronism)

Brian,

Manischewitz is better than MD 20/20, and makes a fine adult grape soda when mixed with something fizzy and bubbly. However, neither of these are ideal choices for a spritzer since they are just too sweet.

Cheap is subjective. $100/bottle is cheap for some and expensive for others. Go to 7-11 and buy a bottle of red and a big gulp. Work your way up from there.

I drink red wine and Coca Cola on the regular in summertime. Kids overseas call it a Kalimotxo

Almost to a person folks are like "what?!?!" until they try it. The combo of not super strong alcohol and caffeine is the perfect mix for extended day drinking IMO.

We call it a "cold coochie" in Germany. People drink it with cheap carton wine, and I guess it's therefor that I associate it with train station hobos and 16 year olds, but I'm not really sure whether that says more about me or the drink.

I prefer a light bodied Kölsch for day drinking, but I can see where you're coming from.

Went out for an anniversary dinner last night with another couple we share the date with. Semi-high end place(Davios) and even though I know better, the plan was to get a steak.
Went with the Prime Naturally Aged(lol) Ribeye for $52, which was for the steak ONLY, sides were extra. Medium rare, though I knew what was coming with that as well:

Considering the price point, just a not good steak overall. Somewhere between rare and medium rare with no real crust. Bill cracked $400 for 4.

steaks actually look pretty good, but funny how most restaurants can't compete with what home cooks in this thread do on a regular basis

It was that raw-in-the-middle, not medium rare, medium rare. Do not want.

As soon as I moved image 1 with my knife and fork, I could tell it was way too flippy floppy before I even cut into it.

Saving graces were tuna tartare and burrata apps.

Yea, borderline deansteaky, amazing when they can't even get a good steakhouse crust with those broilers.

I hope the restaurant wasn't the only one pulling your pants down for your anniversary

Maybe these places will start having customers sign an indemnification waiver before cooking the expensive cuts past blue. "Order at your own risk... No send backs!"

I would 100% eat and drink at chateau malice for $399

Yah I can never bring myself to order medium at *real* steak joints, but medium rare always seems to come out too rare. It's a common theme.

I buy this brand of Burrata for about $8 on average from WF and I havent felt a need to order burrata in restaurants ever since. Just serve with fresh in season veggies or fruits. I like tomatoes, or peaches, or korean pears, or asparagus.

We could start a chain.

My brother and I have definitely kicked around the idea of a higher-end wine/beer/bites place. It's almost impossible to find places in non-major cities that serve good wine by the glass, let alone somewhere that combines that with a great curated taplist. That may be for good reason, of course. The target demographic may be too small, but it may be niche enough.

I'll just offer free steak bites to get the place rolling.

WTF does “naturally aged” mean? Like we naturally aged this steak for a couple years inside a live cow?

In that price range I’m going to be buying stuff from Spain or South America to pair with steak. If you want a specific rec I’d go with Termes rioja. Widely available. Costs about 20 bucks and it’s absolutely delicious.

Well TW was out of the Orin Swift Abstract, had Machete. Did get the Termes Rioja. It’s nice, nothing offensive but not a whole lot going on. I could see how how there higher end stuff has a lot of potential.

Yeah the Numanthia toro is a banger. It’s what I’d have recommended at $50.

Base Hall is pretty amazing for a $50s napa cab, 93-94 points and just as good as a lot of stuff in the $100s.

Also the best membership in napa for sure. You can be unemployed and still be a member.

They sell the base hall for $40 at my Costco.
