We were without power from 3am Monday until noon today, Wednesday. Had folded up some gyoza Sunday night and resorted to this on Monday:

Darn same here, thought it was only a Texas issue. I like the ingenuity.

How cold is it in your house with no electricity and freezing temps? As a Michigander I usually just laugh when the south sees winter for the first time in a decade but usually it’s just morons in cars.

I’d imagine KJS in Portland experienced colder temps but my house in Houston was in the low 40s when it was in the teens outside. I’m from Buffalo, I’m use to cold but not that cold inside with no heat source.

Nice setup! Hope you’re staying warm.

I’m going to make dumplings this weekend, any tips? I am going to make the dough / wrappers from scratch instead of buying the wrappers.

It never got really cold here in Portland, OR; maybe high 20s at the lowest. And I have a gas fireplace so we were plenty warm inside. Gas water heater too. Just no lights, internet, fridge, range. Yes, my stupid house has gas fireplace and water and electric range.

My only tip is cook a spoonful of filling to check the seasoning before all the work to fill a bunch of dumplings.

I'm in the same situation, gas fireplace, water heater, and central heat but electric oven/range. That will be the first thing to change when the remodel happens one of these days. Luckily our neighborhood never lost power or gas.

Another frozen Midwest day, so I made a big pot of the Serious Eats Broccoli and Cheddar soup for lunch.

same here in PDX but you were without power a few more days than we were. wood fireplace & gas cooktop = good. electric water heater = bad.
we're in a mid 50's house with single pane windows. guessing the inside temps got into the high 40s/low 50s away from the living room where the fireplace is (i.e. the bedroom). i now realize why sleeping caps, or night caps, were a thing. slept a couple of nights wearing a touque to keep the bald spot warm.

wise words from a man who has made multiple thousands of dumplings/pierogi in his life.

So you living in one of the rich Dallas neighborhoods?
My house is all electric with a wood fireplace, so I have been really lucky to not have lost power but we are without water and will be for the next week. All I have in the house to drink is diet Dr. Pepper that I'm rationing with the roads undrivable till Monday.

Thanks. Yes, to the right of the Thai chilis is ginger, and behind that is garlic. The other bowl you’re asking about is crushed peppercorn and extra hot chili powder. The pinch bowl below the bell peppers has Kashmiri chili powder, as well.

Hey! I’m mincin’ over here!

Shredded chicken tacos with homemade salsa verde, homemade pico de gallo, homemade shells, crema Mexicana with a bit of lime, and cotija cheese. I also made fresh guacamole with pepitas, but I put it in the fridge while I was cooking, and forgot to put it on the finished product.

MLYLT I don’t know why but I suspect Mark is in Fort Worth. If not he should change his name to MarkNDallas.

I live in Dallas (near White Rock Lake) too and got lucky so far and had no power outages. I have a generator should it happen though

I think you told me but I've forgotten, where are you in DFW?

I live in Dallas and have dodged the blackouts so far which is surprising because I've lost power several times per year for a decade+ so I bought a generator several years ago

Highland Park is its own city btw but I dont know if that makes a difference.

According to this article:

Quote:
She said ONCOR has received reports from customers outside of Highland Park saying that they believe Highland Park still had power, which was not true.

"We're hearing from customers who are in Highland Park who looked at the map and didn't believe they saw their outage reflected accurately on the map," Dunn said.

Viewing Highland Park by ZIP code shows the region partially covered in red and yellow. That means that there are more than 1,000 customers affected by outages in the red region and about 501 to 1000 customers out in the yellow region.
prior power loses have had me prepared for this but I should have had more water and some fire wood too, hopefully everyone learns from this to have a back up plan because its likely to happen again in the future

Thank you. Imagine if the lighting in my kitchen didn't suck, and those tomatoes were bright red, and that salsa deep green.

Thanks, again. Once you get a feeling for the proper consistency of the dough, you can knock out a batch in fifteen minutes plus resting time, and it is well worth it. They look, feel, and taste so much better store-bought tortillas.

Edit: vv Thanks, man.

Hand-breaded chicken breast strip on a homemade pretzel roll with homemade honey mustard and homemade colseslaw. I went too hard on the celery seed for the coleslaw. The bun and the chicken strip were A++.
