And then I see a lady doing just that this weekend for the first time in a while. I just could never, ever imagine standing in a public parking spot and shooing away multiple cars.

Bonus: She was late-40's and saving it for her husband who came in on a motorcycle. This was in a very busy town center with angled street parking so she was just backing up traffic as she mimed to people trying to pull in. The kind of place where spots are open for 3 seconds and on a Friday night. Just **** you lady.

Then it became clear her car was parked next to open spot and her tires on driver side were a foot over the line into the other spot. Double **** you lady.

Now that OP is solved,

How about on a lawn where people are sitting on blankets? If you leave something behind does that reserve your spot for a potty break?

The blanket itself reserves the space covered by the blanket. Leave the blanket.

This, for some reason, cracked me up.

How long have there been hipsters?

How is this different than OP?

Because of Norms. In lawn seating it is guest come first serve and blanket reserves the space. Typically someone will save the blanket while others go to the bathroom. Standing room in front of stage is different animal

Up to the rest of the group to protect the space. WIM rules 100% in effect.

You're absolutely right!

I'm kind of old school but this mentality of saving spots in general admission is a joke. It would certainly never fly in the 80s when I was in college. It's general admission for a reason. You'd get your head knocked off at one of the dozen Ramones concerts at Toad's Place in CT or the Living Room in RI trying that stunt.

Maybe things have changed but that's bs.

I agree with this. If no one is protecting the space, I have no problem folding up the blanket neatly and replacing it with people. I've done this in grandstands where people placed blankets, jackets, etc. over six seats but were nowhere to be found.

A grandstand is a different situation from a lawn at a concert venue. Do you move people's stuff in parks?

Lawn is different leave the blanket, especially after the show has begun.

However in a GA situation similar to OP's I have seen people wait in line with a tarp to go in right when doors open. Then set the tarp over prime real estate and expect that to save space for like 10 of their friends who didn't wait in line.

Almost got into fight with a guy a Wrigley field last summer over this situation. Crowd was filling in around us bfore the show and my buddy and I got pushed onto the corner of this guys tarp. He told us to get off he was saving space, so I bent down and folded up the part of the tarp we were standing on. Needless to say he wasn't happy, but **** yo tarp

Why would I need to move people's stuff in parks?

That would have to be one big mother ****er to save space at any of the GA shows I've been to.

Probably better than Godsmack's 15 minute drum battle that I had to wait through before Metallica came on. That was way more tedious than the 6+ hours standing in the queue so that I could guarantee a front row centre spot.

I don't see any difference between saving with a blanket on a lawn and on a grandstand.

Of course I would never consider leaving either alone with no one protecting. I always figured the general rule would be no more than one spot saved per person on site currently.

Occasionally I see one person trying to save 3 or 4 spots, and
if there are any other spots reasonably nearby I won't call them on it, but I will always consider them an a-hole, and I somtimes will let them know.

Attempting to save standing area as in OP seems really ridiculous, and I don't think I ever ran into that, despite going to tons of small club GA shows in the past.
