Yeah, this is annoying.

I also have some random issues with it flaking out on me in the middle of youtube videos, but fortunately it doesn't happen a lot.

Overall it's great and I'll probably pick up another one for my other TV.

Have one. Use it mostly for YouTube/Hulu until my old boxee box croaks. No problems so far.

Plus, it's ultra-portable.

If it ever gets Watch ESPN and sports packages it will be insane (could use a few others like Crackle, but I don't actually use many services, so it's not important for me yet). It also got me hooked on Netflix with a 3-month free promo, so there's that, too.

It also makes me feel old. I've shown my kids YouTube videos and HBO/Netflix movies with it and say to them, "Isn't this cool? I can take a video from the tablet and watch it on the TV!" A 5-year old and 7-year old look at me blankly. So spoiled with technology.
re: sports

aren't most packages available now, albeit unofficially? afaik most sports have a broadband/mobile package so couldn't you just buy that and stream it to the tv thru the chrome browser?

granted, it wouldn't yet be worthwhile financially for a major sports fan because buying 3 or 4 different packages plus netflix for shows/movies would cost as much if not more than their cable bill. but for someone only interested in one or two, i would think they could do that now and ditch cable entirely.

i have neither chromecast nor any of the broadband sports packages, so maybe it won't work as well as i think. but i'm curious because i've been thinking about ditching cable and just going with chromecast/netflix/sports package or 2.

Along with native app support for youtube, netflix, and a handful of other things, you can also mirror any Chrome window to your television, which is great. The API for Chromecast has just been opened up, so expect many, many more apps to support casting soon.

For $35 it's a pretty no brainer, imo.
I hope what you described is what's in store for me. Started using mine Monday night and have had issues with my devices not being able to detect it. Is this what happened for you? Open the Chromecast app and it says "no chromecasts found?"

Super easy to use and if I can get around these hiccups, I'll be very happy with the purchase.

If I were to buy this thing, and set up a Plex server on one of my computers ... could I then use my android tablet just as a remote - streaming directly from my computer to the chromecast? Or would it stream from my computer, through my tablet, to my chromecast?

No regrets here. Great product.

Casting the chrome browser tab doesn't work very well yet, though as someone said, a computer with a powerful graphics card and a wired connection may do the trick. I use a laptop that's got to be like 8 years old or thereabouts and a wireless internet connection. All the other apps are fantastic, since they run natively on the Chromecast.

I've actually only subscribed to a sports package once and that was because I got MLB free a few years ago. It's one of those things that would make me happy just to know I could do it if I wanted.

Overall, though, Chromecast is great. Just a few more apps and there's not much reason for someone to get a different streaming video player unless they don't have a smartphone or tablet.

I cast chrome browser tabs completely wirelessly, with 0 issues, from my laptop. I have a year old mbp though.

Hmm....probably just my old laptop causing me problems. My computer still works very well otherwise, though. Proud of this thing.

Computer (Plex Media Server) to Plex App (right now the Chromecast option is only for PlexPass members) to Chromecast.

Pretty sure I'm right but I could easily be wrong since I used it only a few times since I have a HTPC.

most (AFAIK) of the official sports packages black out both your local team and whatever games are available nationally, whether that be on espn/some other network or that league's official channel. this can obviously be avoided by using a VPN, which, while testing as legal in terms of courts of law and are usually extremely easy to use, are unfamiliar to a large % of internet users who don't regularly have to deal with sites being blocked in their country.
