Sorry if this has been done before but I don't remember it.

I'm looking for relatively affordable stuff that might seem like a luxury, but once you do it a few times you realize it improves your life far more than what you're spending. I've found a few of these things and I'd love to find more.

I got my shoes shined today for $6+$4 tip, and I feel like a million bucks. So worth it. I'm going to find a place between my work and home and do this more often. Also I am terrible at taking care of my shoes and they always dry out before their time. I figure this might even save me money in the long run by making my shoes last longer (yes I could learn how to do it all myself, but **** that).

Also a few years ago I started paying $40 every 2-3 weeks to get my laundry done. I was spending about $13-$15 on machines and supplies anyway. So for about $12 more per week I get an extra 1-2 hours of my life, and my stuff is neatly folded better than I could ever do. Such a no-brainer for me since I quit playing poker and time became a lot more precious.

Ok so what are some other things that may have at first felt like an extravagant item/service to spend money on but were actually completely worth it?

High speed internet it's not that much more if you negotiate a deal with your provider. Hate dealing with lagging videos or slow downloads.

Suzzer,

I'll get back to you about the actual thread topic, but those are the worst shoes I've ever seen.

Burn them immediately.

Yes and I posted those because they looked weird and reminded me of some of the fashion guy posts. Not because I thought they were anything special.

These shoes on the other hand are perfectly normal square-toed black leather shoes from Aldo. Mullen is just trolling. Probably since I took the bait others will join in now. The circle of life continues.

meh, can't think of anything except meditation.

it is literally one of the most powerful practices you can take up and it's absolutely free.

if your car trunk smells, keep a box of fabric softener (the sheet kind) in the back. they will make it smell wonderful.

I assure you I'm not trolling. If I was intentionally choosing bad dress shoes, those are the actual shoes I would choose.

If you google "bad dress shoes" or "bad dress shoe styles" you'll get an idea of what I'm saying. You should not be wearing square-toed shoes ever. Anyone with even the smallest bit of fashion sense will think less of you for wearing those, even if they shouldn't.

Do you have a good book or website for a beginner? I got a book but I think it's a little advanced for me.

Actually the photo reminded me of the first few times I had my pants properly hemmed rather than rolling them under. It still makes me feel very grown up and I get a kick out of it.

Paper magazines deserve a mention, too, and really looking forward to reading them.

Power of Now should get you into why meditation is important and how it can be practical in our lives.

Then you can just watch a bunch of youtube videos on it.

Ok, that is your opinion. Plenty of people wear square-toed shoes. What makes you think these are my dress shoes - because I'm wearing them with jeans? I have large feet so pointy shoes look really long on me.

Google shows a mixture of everything btw. I agree the half-pointy, half-square style where the square part is about an inch long are terrible. The ones in my pic are more of the stubby square-toe.

Hm, I would think upscale casual would be compromising as it's neither or. Either go full out upscale, or keep it casual imo. But I'm a noob in fashion so I'm open for discussion (I just learned what colors to wear with what so I'm not a total eye soar :P)

I'm just describing the shoes. Those shoes should not be worn under any normal circumstance. Proper fitting captoes will not look long on you - visit a shoe store such as an Allen Edmonds and have a salesman fit you to understand what I'm talking about.

I assure you that my opinion is unanimous with anyone with any modern fashion sense. Those shoes are out of style. They would go well with pleated, baggy pants and an ill-fitting dress shirt.

I have pointy shoes I wear when I wear a suit. I don't like to wear them with jeans as they look out of place to me. If I want to wear black shoes with jeans I wear the ones in the pic.

Sometimes us 40-year-olds just gotta roll with the semi-classic styles until they come around again. We look pretty ridiculous when we get the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy bleeding edge of fashion makeover. It's not like I'm trying to get in to clubs anymore. But it's also not like I'm wearing mom jeans.

Please feel free post some shoes I should be wearing.

Something like these would be a versatile shoe (Allen Edmonds strands). You can dress them down with jeans or wear them with a navy or grey suit, etc.

I wouldn't wear black shoes ever with jeans. I'd only wear them on a formal occasion that it goes with. Like a funeral. These would be good for it.

Basically, just don't ever buy anything square toed and you'll be better off.

Alternatively, you can buy some Nike Spizike's.

Never too old, imo

I could be like those 38-year-old managers at work who wear vests and rolled up skinny jeans in attempt to fit in with the millennials they manage.

Yeah ok, googling around square-toed shoes are definitely out in the fashion world. Although I always feel good when I'm afoul of Details magazine on anything. They're such preening douchebags. Those shoes you posted are nice.

So much for feeling like a million bucks. Thanks. Now I feel more like the pimp of the year in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka when he got out of jail.

I still think the square-toed shoes look fine on their own for w/o the social stigma for being "cheap" and too 90s. Apparently if you buy $100 shoes at Aldo you might as well be on People of Walmart.

Also if you have big wide feet they fit so much better than most pointy shoes. All the Indian guys I work with wear those really long pointy shoes and I just think they look ridiculous. No idea if those are in fashion or not. I would literally look like a clown if I wore those.

Although I did find this random commenter who made me feel a little better:
Quote:
The fashion industry is literaly that: an industry. It's goal is to convince you that you need to regularly cycle through your clothing and accessories in order to keep up with the times. Realistically, it's the fashion industry's version of planned obsolescence. That doesn't mean that it's wrong to keep up with trends but it also means that what the fashion industry says are the rules aren't rules at all. The only people who take them literally as rules are people who are involved in and directly benefit from the fashion industry (including celebrities) and fashion victims. Fashion victims are the people who dedicate an unusual amout of time, money and effort towards always being on the cutting edge of fashion and following the latest rules even though their jobs or livelyhoods don't depend on it. (Ironically, if you look at an actual fashion designer and business leader like Karl Lagerfeld, he neither keeps up with the trends nor follows the rules for his own outfits; he always wears his weird goth pirate pageboy outfit.)

The point I'm trying to make is that, unless the shoes you want to buy are obviously outdate or obviously outstanding for the wrong reasons, they'll probably be perfectly acceptable and almost certainly unnoticed by the overwhelming majority of people. Anyone who gives you a hard time over square VS pointy shoes is almost certainly a fashion victim or someone who takes that sort of thing too seriously. If you showed up wearing platform clogs, that'd be something else. Otherwise, if what you're wearing is clean, not particularly outstanding and not obviously outdated or gawdy, it's probably totally okay.
