The important part is the grilling of the bread and the melting of the cheese (any kind of cheese, or combination of cheeses - for God's sake let's not get into people claiming a grilled cheese made with the 'wrong' king of cheese isn't a grilled cheese and needs a special new name), not the fat used for the grilling (in my opinion, obviously).

So IMO butter is legit. Mayo is legit. Olive oil is legit. Coconut oil. Peanut oil. Vegetable oil. Et frigging cetera.

We don't need different names for the same sandwich just because the fat used for grilling is different. Some might prefer one, some another. That's not the point!

Maybe scrambled eggs made on a flat grill needs a different name that scrambled eggs made in a skillet, and scrambled eggs made in a saucepan needs a different name than scrambled eggs cooked in a non-stick fry pan. The all the different fats that could be used cooking scrambled eggs. We could have an infinite number of 'names' for the idea of scrambled eggs.

It is if you put the mayo on the outside of your cheese sandwich and fry it up on the flat top grill.

But butter is better.

And butter and parmesan is awesome. Especially on a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.

75%+ would not use butter, buddy. I'll guess 40% for gc.

digressing for a moment from the grilled cheese debate, here's another cheap luxury.

turn the broiler setting of your oven on. pour a decent amount of canned grated parmesan into a bowl (see my previous posts about a low budget alternative to the almighty kraft). add a little bit of mayo at a time and stir until the mixture just barely sticks together, then stop. dice up a few green onion tops, mix them in, and spread the mixture onto some slices of bread (i like sourdough, but all types work, experiment for yourself if you prefer the bread to be pre-toasted or not).

put the mixture topped bread slices on a pan under the broiler and keep a constant eye on them. once they start to turn brown and bubble they will quickly go from yum to dumb. pull when crispy brown and enjoy!

I consider libraries a cheap(free) luxury as yay books. Lots and lots of books plus magazines and dvds. You can't really go wrong, well except get them back late then there are fines. I am an avid reader and use the library frequently.
Also herbal teas fresh from the garden, hot or cold, totally delicious and so good for you!

haven't been to a library in years, but once upon a time I would check out cds and dvds and rip them to disk. talk about a cheap (free) luxury.
I was also exposed to many artists I likely wouldn't have known otherwise.
