Good morning, everybody.

Aside from collecting pool balls, I also like to invent new games. Here's one I dreamt up as a birthday gift for a Romanian buddy, it's based on the colours of his national flag and is actually rather good fun to play.

I miss the days when ESPN2 on Sundays would alternate between trick shots and World’s Strongest Man

Those Mosconi vs Fats matches were the coolest
Surprised televised pool in not really a thing any more.

This post made me really happy man. Ruper, you seem like a good dude. Anyone that events a game as a birthday gift is pretty awesome.

That's very kind, sir, thank you!

I've invented a few games over the years, I'll post up some more when the chance arises.

Best wishes.

Good afternoon, Alobar.

I used to work in the snooker industry for many years, sir. I was a cuemaker and also a columnist for several of the trade magazines.

Best wishes.

I dunno, struck me as funny. I've played way too much pool in my life, and just don't recall anyone including myself, ever commenting, "ya know, these balls just don't seem round."

Anyway, cool thread.

It does sound strange I agree, Sparks, but it honestly was a major selling point of these fabulous pool balls. That little booklet in the picture devoted many of its eight pages waxing lyrical about the roundness of Raschig balls, within 0.02 millimetres they promised and a centre of gravity exactly in the middle.

Thank you for having a look, much appreciated indeed.

Best wishes.

Did anyone end up getting the $100 reward?

Alas not yet, sir, but I remain hopeful of success. 5,800 views and counting is very encouraging.

Best wishes.

To echo others, this is an unexpectedly great thread.

I have sometimes thought pool balls seemed too big/small or heavy/light at different places, but always assumed there was a very standard size and weight that was adhered to and that I must just be wrong so its kinda cool to read about the variable sizes of these different sets.

Many thanks indeed, CDL.

On a related subject, you would be surprised at how much smaller and lighter some number 1 balls are in certain establishments. The reason being they are always at the apex of the rack for break shots and get worn down quicker than the other colours.

Best wishes.

The Color of Money or The Hustler?

I know the answer, just wanting to get your (and any others') opinion.

I loved them both, but for me The Color of Money was a great film about pool. The Hustler was a great film, period.

Best wishes.

My guess is that Billiards went much the same direction as bowling did where the Association had to pony up for the air time and also cover much of the production cost. As those costs go up, it becomes more of a challenge to find the sponsors willing to help pay to defray the costs.

Ummm, don't think this is true. Particularly since 8-ball is played, at least in the US, at probably a 10 to 1 ratio compared to 9-ball. I believe 9-ball is the only game where the 1 ball is racked at the apex. And also, the balls don't get worn. At least I've never noticed it nor heard anyone comment on such a thing. I've played in probably 100 different pool halls dating back to my college days.

I really like both, but if forced to pick, I'd take Color of Money.

Every single game of pool I've ever played has had the yellow at the top (both 8 and 9 ball). Obviously have no idea what the effect is.

yeah, everyone i know racks the one at top in 8 ball.....I dont spend a lot of time in pool halls tho *shrug*

I don't understand how that would effect the weight tho. And also the size of the ball would have to decrease, and that would be incredibly noticeable when racking I would imagine.

Good afternoon, everyone.

No luck as yet with my original quest for that missing Poker Ball, but I remain hopeful and sincerely grateful for the warm welcome and interest from all on the forum. Over 5,000 views is amazing and extremely encouraging that somebody, somewhere might find the ball one day and remember me.

Please find my new appeal detailed in the wanted poster, below. I am seeking either of these beautiful Hyatt Romanique sets in perfect, unused condition. The set on the left is seldom seen, so rare in fact that I will pay an additional $50 to anybody just for information if it leads to a sale.

Best wishes and thank you for reading.

I've never seen the colors done like the one on the left before. I really like how the stripes look. Are there many other sets that do that?

Hello, Gregorio.

Check out the Prestige Balls of post #117, sir. Not exactly the same, but rather similar.

Best wishes.

I'm quite selective in my collecting, favouring the old style number font and logos in the usual spot.

I'm a massive Pac Man fan, one of the relatively few players to have a achieved a maximum score back in the 1980s. Despite my love for this arcade classic these balls from Australia don't really float my boat, they're a bit too amateurish in their design in my view. I'd much prefer a small Pac Man or ghost logo as a substitute for the numbers.
