Well, there must always be that slim chance, sir, as I bought both sets from Nevada sellers. I sincerely hope that might be true, it would be immensely satisfying to reunite a missing ball with its lost box. I'll have a better idea when my new purchase arrives later this week. Either way it seems like a minor miracle to me.

Elsapo: I don't know how many of these rare poker sets were originally made, dear chap. As so few become available on online auction sites or within collecting circles (perhaps once every two or three years) my best guess would be not many at all. Minimum production runs today tend to be 200 units, so maybe this sort of figure might be near the mark?
Snafu: I don't recall any Grateful Dead billiard balls, sir, but in a similar vein there are Metallica and KISS sets occasionally available. By sheer coincidence, a brand new example of the former has just cropped up on British eBay at a bargain price of £29 (they usually retail for about £100). Picture to follow.

Much would depend on the design of the balls (a numberless striped set would likely be far cheaper to manufacture than something rather more complicated like my poker balls for instance).
I know of a fellow who commissioned a snazzy chess-themed collection (minimum order 200 sets) and had to pay well over $100 per box. It's a costly business and rarely successful.
